First, over 50% of this 321-page book provides information on best places to live for physical and mental disabilities; this was not clearly advertised in the product description (and was of no use to me). Second, all the information appears to be compilations from other sources (Dept. of Labor, independent surveys, etc.) vs. produced by the author and his team. In the past, I always got Places Rated Almanac but it seemed that Best Places had a newer version. However, despite being a 2017 version, a lot of the information in Best Places is 5-10 years old. For me, this purchase was a waste of money - I suggest you get Places Rated Almanac.

It was a quite informative book. Not like Places Rated Almanac , but OK. It lacked certain important items, while putting in too much info on others. I also felt that it was too PC . All in all, a decent starter book, but you could probably get more info from You Tube.

Good book. Would have liked more detailed tax information on each state.

Disappointed...did not have as much information as the one we bought years ago.

I was very disappointed when I received this book. It consists of poorly organized charts which do not give an explanation on how to interpret them. Also, one third of the book is about relocating with a disability. I expected some information on this topic but not this much. Save your money and use the internet to look at basic information on how cities/ states are rated for various basic topics.

However, obviously a person is going to have to weigh what is most important to them tempered with their own intuition/logic because it is common knowledge that sometimes a high number of job opportunities make up for how high cost an area is. Additionally, my husband and I personally weigh economic opportunity as a high factor in the length of time and how long when it comes to choose to live in an area, then affordability and then what kind of place it is (suburb,city, country area etc.). However, I have personally been around people where what kind of place an area is comes first, then affordability and opportunity closely ranked. When it comes to economic opportunity I admit to looking at more than just for my age group yet also for in the event that I am still both alive and employed in my 60s/70s regardless of my economic status level (with humble intent because of the age my late adoptive parents were when they passed away). I admit that I was pleasantly surprised to see that the metropolitan Washington DC area made some beneficial rankings in multiple categories even in this kindlebook. I have resided in Hyattsville Maryland since May 19, 2010 and my husband since June 2010 and we both have enjoyed multiple benefits to residing in the metropolitan Washington D.C. area. Additionally, this kindlebook has fascinating rankingw both involving best states to make a living, rankings of affordability activities quality of life health care, and more. The only caveats that I notice is that a significant portion of this kindlebook while informative/helpful was geared more towards caretakers either of an older parent andor one’s child (though a perfect kindlebook if you are in these groups) and the authors viewpoint on mainstream media articles. While the author at least explained why they feel this way, my awareness is that like any profession you have your good andor professional/fair writers and then you have writers that are equally talented yet you know to have both eyes wide open when browsing such articles. Aside from those caveats, this kindlebook has a decent amount of information for the bargain price that I paid for this kindlebook.

About the Author

Msgr. George J. Moorman was born in 1883 at Indiana, where he spent the majority of his life. He was ordained a priest on the thirteenth of June, 1908, by Bishop Herman J. Alerding at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. He remained a priest for over seventy years, serving as an editor of Our Sunday Visitor and an army chaplain during the first World War. His work The Latin Mass Explained was originally published in 1920 by Our Sunday Visitor Press, upon which it received the Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur. TAN reprinted the book with new material in 2007. Father Moorman died in 1979 at the age of 95.

I am a Catholic convert. It's been 25 years now, so I came to the Church long after Vatican II had, if not banished, at least forcefully discouraged, the Latin Rite, and after so many other things had been removed or changed. I was interested in where the Church had come from, in the pre-Vatican II Church about which I had heard so much. Fortunately, we have a church in Milwaukee, St Stanislaus, run by the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest, where they only perform the Latin Rite. Apparently there is something of a resurgence in the Tridentine Mass, as St Stanislaus now has an active following, with many young families seeking out something other than the Novus Ordo. Here in Sheboygan, the priests from St Stanislaus perform the Tridentine Mass twice monthly on Sunday afternoons, and I have begun to attend. All this is leading up to my review of THE LATIN MASS EXPLAINED.I was immediately impressed by the piety and reverence of the parishioners attending. None of the chit-chatting and fidgeting before and after Mass. Simply, quiet. The Mass itself is a bit disorienting at first for the novice, but the majesty and the mystery spoke to me on another level. It was powerful. Even though I had a Missal from 1962 with both Latin and English translations, I was occasionaly lost. What was happening? I was already beginning to understand, and to see some of the liturgical similarities between the Tridentine and Novus Ordo when I purchased THE LATIN MASS EXPLAINED.The book, however, brought everything into focus. It is a wonderful introduction, full of history and background, as well as a detailed description of the Mass itself. Why Latin? Why the symbols? Msgr. Moorman's explanations make perfect sense to me.But why Latin? It is a venerable language on account of its origin and its antiquity.... the same language with which it was offered [the Mass] in times long past in the obscurity of the Catacombs.It is a Mysterious Language. Because it is a dead language, not understood by the people, there is an element of mystery about the Latin tongue. The use of an unknown tongue conveys to the mind of the people that something is going on upon the altar which is beyond their comprehension.It Fosters Unity in the Church. The use of Latin is a means of maintaining unity in the Church, as well as uniformity in her services, the the use of one and the same language in Catholic churches all over the surface of the globe is a connecting link...It Safeguards Truth. A dead language is not subject to change. Languages in daily use undergo a continual process of change...But the meaning of the words in a dead language is fixed. [50-52]Overall, anyone interested in the Latin Mass is urged to pick up this book. It is the best resource I've found so far.

I am relatively new to the Latin Mass. This book explains what is going on extremely well. It explains the Mass in a way in which you can't help but fall in love with it. You'll never regret spending money for this diamond of a book. Highly recommend. Get it now!!!

SO much has been lost, in the wake of Vatican II. Lost may be too kind -- destroyed is more honest. This book does a wonderful job of explaining the Mass, in all its richness, and helping us to comprehend the SACRIFICE, itself a word not much in favor in these ecumenical days of deconstruction.

Msgr. Moorman's useful book will give Catholics and others curious about the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, a.k.a., the Traditional Latin Mass, a grasp of the rituals, aesthetics, and, most importantly, theology of the Mass as it was celebrated before Pope Paul VI's liturgical revolution. My only qualification in recommending it comes from the fact that the book was written before that revolution. Therefore, it cannot explain to modern Catholics the differences between the Extraordinary Form and how Mass is typically celebrated now. For that, one can turn to Thomas Woods's Sacred Then and Sacred Now: The Return of the Old Latin Mass, written and released last year in the aftermath of Summorum Pontificum, Pope Benedict's instruction liberalizing access to the older form of Mass. The books do complement each other, however. Time spent with Msgr. Moorman will provide readers with an overall theology and framework, while time spent with Dr. Woods will show how the Extraordinary Form can be appreciated by modern worshipers.

First published in 1920, this 190-page book by Msgr. Moorman is an excellent study of the Latin Mass. Straight-forward and detailed, Msgr. Moorman covers such topics as the sacrificial nature of the mass, the language, the vestments, and the different parts of the mass. This is good Catholic teaching in general, and I think much of it applies to the current rite, not just to the extraordinary form.One of the great features of this book is that the origins and reasons for the tradition in the mass are described. Even the name "Mass" - from the Latin 'missio' - to send out, dismissal - has a story behind it. The explanation of the different pieces of the vestments and their colors, the construction of the altar, the different directions which the priest faces during different parts of the mass all show how each element is rooted in Tradition and Holy Writ.I think the core teaching and one of the pearls of this book is the explanation of what a sacrifice is, its importance in history, and how the Catholic Mass carries that forward.Written in non-technical language, this book reads quickly, but covers a lot of information. Anyone wanting to know about the meaning and origins of the Latin Mass - not just those who attend - will gain a lot from this book.

This book is an interesting read - with just the right amount of detail. It’s hard to believe it was written about a century ago. He basically steps through the Latin mass one phrase, one action at a time, with necessary commentary along the way.I would highly recommend this book. It is an easy, fascinating, informative read.

The picture for this is deceiving. My dad has been looking for these books for a while and I wanted to find ones that looked like the picture on the posting since those are what he remembers from his childhood. That is not what I received in the mail. The books have very different covers and I’m not sure if the inside content has been changed or updated (since I’ve never read the books and have not given them to my dad yet). Seemed deceiving since I was looking for the older books and these are obviously new editions.

these are old time reference books with story's about how or older generations lived , survived made things with out the aid of any thing electric ,digital , running water , TV etc. . life simpler you want to learn to cope and survive read these and more before all this great knowledge is lost .

I owned these books over 30 years ago and one of my sons "borrowed and lost" the set. So, I was able to find another original set on Amazon.com. These are excellent books that contain a vast amount of simple to understand basis 'how to' books. Survival or just how things are done from killing hogs for hams to anything you need to be self sufficient in the woods or new environment.

was trying to purchase these because my Dad had them - the ones pictured with the different color covers - but that's not what I rec'd - very disappointing indeed.

We read the first ones so much they were coming apart so needed a replacement. It was good to be able to do so.

love learning things from our past

Books were not in good condition. The spin was broken on one of the books and the original set box it came in was damaged.

I had a set before but, they got lost somewhere along the way while I was moving from on place to another for my employer. It was great to be able to reacquire these. They are crammed with knowledge our forefathers took for granted and we may need one day.

I wanted a travel guide for a long European trip through several countries. I was traveling very light so wanted the guide to be in digital format. The Lonely Planet guide seemed to fit the bill. It shares the fault of essentially all media formatted for Kindle that the illustrations and maps are not useable in that format. I did find the Lonely Planet guide useful, but not ideal. A large part of the guide deals with places to eat, drink, sleep and party. I didn't need this. I think lodgings are best found on line, and I can find my own restaurants. I often wanted more information on sights and activities, and instructions on local public transportation and driving laws. Perhaps it would be better-but much more expensive-to have a separate guide for each country visited. I advise the reader to look at several guide books before choosing this one.

OK for getting snippets on lots of places. If you anticipated taking it with you, forget that. Either cut it up to take the sections you might need or leave it home. It is a brick by size and weight. It is a challenge when you are going to be potentially visiting multiple countries/cities to get something that does it well - this is totally expansive in terms of the number of countries and major cities. You alternative is a virtual library for individual counties/cities.

This Lonely Planet guide is a helpful resource as long as you know what it is before you get it. It's not full of color pictures. If you're looking for inspiration in color pictures, then you might want to pick up a DK book. The maps are helpful, but not sufficient (but who needs maps these days when everyone has smart phones?). It's not even very useful as a guide on your trip.At +1200 pages, you won't want to carry this tome around Europe with you. Maybe you'll tear a few pages out. Also even though the book has +1200 pages, it isn't enough long enough to tell you everything there is to do in Europe.This is like a pre-planning book. Flip through this book. You might find some countries besides France that you're interested in visiting. Then buy some books on those specific countries to do your real planning. It's a great starting point, but it's not the only book you'll need for your tour of Europe.

I have been using Lonely Planet guides for over a decade now. Despite the growth of travel blogs and TripAdvisor cutting into their model, these books are still very enlightening and easy to use. This book fits all of Europe (literally every country) into 1200 pages weighing just a couple pounds. Each country is obviously much less detailed than the individual books (especially Turkey, whose section is the same size as Switzerland's).I think the book is most helpful as a way to determine where you want to go, given your budget and amount of time. TripAdvisor can tell you where to stay, but this book really helps to explain what to do once you're in the city. Compared to ten years ago, there are way fewer hotel and restaurant recommendations, which makes sense. The copious maps with landmarks are extremely helpful during travel.My only beef would be a lack of companion app for smartphones or tablets. You can download the title itself, but there's no app to link everything together. Maybe it is coming, but I think it would be a good addition.

I bought the Kindle version of this book and I am frustrated because the publishers did not include page numbers. This is a serious mistake because the absence of page numbers in the Kindle version makes it difficult for students to follow their professors as they study along. For example, my professor asked my class to read pages 151 to 156, and some other pages but I can not locate them in Kindle. Right now, this version is useless for me without the page numbers. I do not know what to do. I am considering buying the hard copy which is not very different in price as the e-book. I am really disappointed because the e-books can only be returned after 7 days, and I am well beyond that deadline. This problem did not come to my attention because I bought this book during my break, and only looked at it when school resumed. I have bought e-books in the past, and I assumed that, like other books, this particular book will have page numbers.

Both the Kindle cloud reader online and the Kindle app through the windows store failed to even open this book. The only way I was able to open the book was by using Amazon's Kindle for PC app. Had I been unable to do so, the purchase would have been useless except as a lesson hard-learned.A separate problem (and a recurring one for all Kindle books) is that there appears to be no way to get the original page numbers of the textbook on the app. When a professor says to turn to page 208, I need to be able to find page 208 without having to go through the rigmarole of figuring out that 208/~1600 is 13% of the book, and 13% of 56299 is ~7318 (which, incidentally, doesn't even get me where I need to go). Compelling me to go through these kinds of acrobatics frustrates the academic process because my professor and I are often, quite literally, not on the same page.

Bought this casebook here on Amazon for $236.00 plus tax right before Winter Semester 2018. It's a steep price but I bought it for the following reasons. 1) I couldn't find this edition in looseleaf version used for cheaper. 2) I needed it in looseleaf edition for the following trick.I prefer the looseleaf edition for this massive casebook for the following trick for 1L students: You can separate the pages or chapters, which allows you to bring in a small binder, (you can find thin binders at you local dollar tree for $1) only the chapters or pages you are working with to class. This way you don’t have to bring the whole gigantic casebook with you to class all the time. Your backpack will be a lot lighter and your back will thank me. I bought this 5-Inch D-Ring Binder for $12.07 (also on Amazon) to fit the casebook in and it fits good: http://a.co/1lH7Vuc

Overall, it's a decent Constitutional Law book. My one complaint is that, when a case has multiple opinions and the author chooses not to include them all, he doesn't make a notation in the text that he has done so. It is the only book I've ever had to use that does this, and it's incredibly irritating. The author says he felt that including an acknowledgement of what he had cut didn't provide substantive information, so it didn't matter. However, it leaves the reader with a false impression of how the case was decided. It is especially frustrating in the cases where he ONLY lists the author of the opinion, so it appears that everyone signed onto it, when in reality there were three concurrences. It gives you an incomplete knowledge of what actually went on in the case.

I guess this casebook is one of the standards on Constitutional Law. It is definitely well-written and easy to follow, but, at around 1900 pages, the book is way too long. Probably would be good as a two-volume set, but then I am sure the publisher would jack up the price and make it even harder for financially struggling law students to afford. As published, this book is so fat and heavy to carry, I actually injured my writing hand early in the semester last fall trying to grip it. It's been painful and I may have to have hand surgery at some point to correct the problem. This is not a great thing to have happen early in 2L year while picking up one's casebook.Wolters Kluwer red bindings are of very poor quality for expensive hardback books. This one started to wear almost on the first day of class. The paper is very cheap as well, almost like newsprint. I don't like to highlight in paper books, but it is nearly impossible to take any kind of notes in pencil on the thin paper used for printing. Sometimes the poor quality of paper even makes it difficult to read. West's hardbound casebooks are generally much more durable and usable.One bright thing is the accompanying e-book version that is included in the purchase price. It's not the fastest e-book to load, but its highlighting system is excellent. Constitutional Law is a required 2nd-year class at my school and this book is the required text. After the hand injury, if I didn't have an e-book and hand to carry the 10-pound monster paper version around every day, I would probably have had to go on a leave of absence.

The cover of the book is heavily worn, with rough, exposed corners. Moreover, there is clear water damage to some of the pages. The biggest problem, though, is that the cover and binding of the book are so worn that, even with an abundance of care above what I usually give to a rented textbook, they will likely fall off. Like it's possible the cover will fall off if I look at it funny. The text on the inside is relatively unhighlighted and unmarked, but I am concerned that the book will fall apart within a few days of use. Very disappointed.

God transforms lives, and so we should not fear. On the chapter entitled, "Jesus," the reader will learn that "Jesus is enough." He was not overly "nice," however, but "...a dangerous alternative kind of power that was prepared to name names . . ."). This hope is all-inclusive, rooted in neighborliness. This book will make you think: "The church is to be odd in the world, noticed in the community for walking to a different drummer." What is "Neighbor Love (chapter eight)? What is a key act of love? Why are hospitality and vengeance juxtaposed? Why are we given the commandment to love one another? If you love books you can read in small bits and pieces and put down and think about, this collection will stir your heart and mind with hope. I will return to it again and again.
