Ernst's book is an illuminating and well-written companion to the Qur'an. . . . Demonstrat[es] that the Qur'an can actually be read, rather than just quoted, dissected, summarized, ridiculed, glorified or studied for its obvious importance in later Islam.--Times Literary SupplementThe Qur'an is widely misunderstood, partly because it's very difficult to read. . . Ernst explains why and offers a way through.--EndeavorsThis book includes an accessible discussion of Qur'anic studies to date, along with easily followed investigations of particular chapters using the ring methodology. Also included is a brief appendix with pointers for students so that they can use the author's approach to treat other chapters of the Qur'an similarly. Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates through researchers/faculty; general readers.--ChoiceThis will serve both as a fine teaching tool at the college or seminary level and as a useful resource for engaged nonspecialists, who will find it challenging but rewarding.--Library JournalErnst offers this elegant guide on how to read and understand the text sacred to Muslims.--Publishers WeeklyErnst's scholarship makes room for a respectful appreciation of the religiouscommitments of many who approach it. Such a judicious approach models a way forward for Christians, Jews, Muslims and people who profess none of these faiths to read the Qur'an and talk with one another about what they read.--Christian CenturyMuslim, non-Muslim, religious, and irreligious readers will all find in the Qur'an, as Ernst presents it here, something of interest. This is a groundbreaking and essential book, surely to be of interest and use in mosque study groups and intellectually minded book clubs as well as classrooms. An appendix on "Suggested Interpretive Exercises" will serve all such audiences well.--Rain Taxi Review of Books

After reading Michael Sells’ Approaching the Qur’an: The Early Revelations, I wanted another book that would help me understand the Qur’an from a literary-historical perspective. Ernst, a scholar of Islam at UNC, made headlines in 2002 when (under his recommendation) the university assigned Sells’ book as required reading for all freshman students. Ernst held the audacious belief that students should understand the religion of the terrorists America was fighting against — that we should learn something about Islam beyond the headlines about al Qaeda. In that spirit, he has written this book, a kind of “Qur’an as literature” book explaining the genesis of the text and outlining what he calls a “post-Orientalist” approach to the text. Ernst wants to use the historical and literary tools of European Enlightenment scholarship while still respecting traditional Islamic modes of reading the Qur’an. This book is an argument for that fusion and a look at some of the scholars, such as Fred Donner, Andrew Rippin, Michel Cuypers, and Jane Dammen McAuliffe, who are doing so.Muslims believe that the Qur’an was revealed verbatim to Muhammad from 610 to 632. Yet Muslims acknowledge that the surahs (chapters) of the Qur’an can be categorized by the period in which they were revealed during the prophet’s life. Generally there are three main categories: the early Meccan surahs, the middle and later Meccan surahs, and the Medinan surahs. These three categories of surahs differ in length, structure, and main themes. The early Meccan surahs, written when Muhammad was just beginning his prophetic ministry, tend to be short and highly apocalyptic. Later surahs expanded and focused more on the revelation’s legitimacy and on retellings of biblical narratives. By the Medinan period, when Muhammad was the leader of a powerful political-religious movement, surahs grew even longer and began to include rules for the newly formed religion. Can you tell that I enjoyed this book? But there are loose ends in Ernst. For example — one traditional Muslim hermeneutic for the Qur’an is called the doctrine of abrogation. This is how Muslims harmonize verses in the Qur’an that appear to contradict. The verse revealed later takes precedent and supersedes the earlier one. Ernst argues that this approach to the text is too propositional — it takes verses out of context, piecemeal, like a fundamentalist Christian reads the Bible. He argues instead that when read in context, many of these supposedly contradictory verses are in fact just parts of a multifaceted tapestry. Is he right? I am not sure. I do not know enough to assess. But this book has given me a lot to think about!

The course was an introduction to exegesis for undergraduates. And I chose Ernst as a text because he gave very good examples in how to use genre, structure, and history to understand a text that would be completely bewildering to most of my students. The book was a hit, and probably the best review I can give came from my students: Every single one said that they were keeping this in their library and not selling it.back! It was very usable, has some good sample exercises in the appendix, and is extremely respectful of Islamic tradition. Indeed, at the beginning of our course the students would call every reading of the Qur'an "Weird." By the end of the course they were able to pick out ring structures, navigate shifts of perspective, and identify Meccan and Medinan suras. They came away with a high regard for the Qur'an. I'd say that this book worked well, and I would highly recommend it.

Carl Ernst's "How to Read the Qur'an" is a wonderfully lucid and concise guide to this sacred text. The book offers a specifically literary and historical approach to the Qur'an that is accessible to the non-specialist. In particular, Ernst translates several full suras and provides succinct outlines that help readers engage with the lengthier ones. He also offers insight into the structure of the suras as well as their intertextual connection to Biblical and extra-Biblical works. Ernst does not do all the work for the reader, though, allowing them instead to dive into the Qur'an on their own and in a manner of their choosing. He suggests several English translations, and for instructors he provides recommendations for lesson plans. Ultimately, Ernst gives a persuasive argument for understanding the Qur'an as part of, rather than separate from, the grand Monotheistic systems of the Mediterranean. More broadly, this book not only offers powerful tools for reading the Qur'an, it also provides useful templates and approaches that could be applied to other religious texts and scriptures as well.

Many people, after 9/11, realizing they knew too little about the second largest religion in the world, went to the Qur'an, attempted to read it like any other book, and utterly failed. The Qur'an, like the Bible, requires a guide. And unlike the Bible, Westerners typically know nothing of where to begin. (At the beginning? Wrong!) Read this book. Come to understand the Qur'an. Speaking as a non-Muslim, I not only came to understand Islam better, I also gained a better perspective on my own Judeo-Christian heritage.

Ernst does a fantastic job of discussing what is at stake in various ways of reading the Qur'an, as well as laying out his presuppositions and values. This book is not geared towards the faithful seeking devotional assistance, but neither is it a stodgy academic book that presents an "authoritative" history and reading. Instead, Ernst provides the tools for exploring the Qur'an as a literary text on one's own or in a group. The background history is helpful without focusing on too much minutiae, and the examples demonstrate how to utilize Ernst's tools while still requiring the reader to reflect on the passages. A very good place to start for the "curious outsider."

It arrived very quickly after I placed the order. The shipment is amazingly effective. The book is very good for students who want to learn about the Qur'an as well as as a textbook.

Carl W Ernst's How to Read the Koran is helpful, scholarly without being inaccessible. It warns against populist selective quotation, e.g. to support the view that Islam is inevitably violent. It gives me some sense of the beauty and structure of the Koran, which I have read in an attempt to see for myself what it says.

A new approach to look at one of the most misunderstood books(the Quran).Gives you a direct approach for viewing the Quran ;clear simple and well organized.Thank you Carl W. Ernest

A Taste of Water: Christianity Through Taoist-Buddhist Eyes

From Library Journal

Written by a Catholic sister born in Taiwan and educated in the United States and a Jesuit priest born and raised in California who has lived most of his adult life in Japan, this book combines autobiographical and theological reflection in a marvelous account of how classical Taoist and Mahayana Buddhist studies have "more than any other element in our spiritual quest . . . assisted" the authors "to become better Christians." Hand explains how his Christianity became freed from overdependence on canon law, dogmatic definition, and personalization of God; for both, issues of human selfhood and no-self emerge as they recount their experience-centered reading of Christian scripture from a Taoist-Buddhist consciousness. Highly recommended as an excellent book of interfaith dialog and a guide to developing one's spirituality.Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

This is a very well done piece. Despite what some might think this book is NOT trying to Christianize traditional Chinese teachings. I found it to be just the OPPOSITE! The authors use the teachings of their childhood (mostly Toaist and Zen teachings) to explain eastern christianity. The Christianity of the Chinese and other eastern people is very different than that of the west. For western Christians who find their church's teachings no longer speak to them this is a wonderful book. I find myself very influenced by eastern teachings, they speak to beliefs I have always held and had no name for.If you are easilly offended or feel that no religious teachings should ever be meshed this book is not for you. As the authors would say, "teachings and dogma are only useful if we are not attached to them. As soon as we become afraid to change them, examine them, or modify them they become a stumbling block." So for those who are more interested in finding a universal truth than blinding clinging to teachings this book will truely be a "taste of water".

This is a wonderful interfaith dialogue, and it has an interesting "test" to help the reader discover his or her ideal approach to spiritual practice. I have gone back to this book many times over the years, and this was my second purchase to replace a well-worn copy years old.

This book is a unique gem. In my own spiritual travels I have found that most who grow beyond the needs for "external" religion turn inward and are in great need of the tools and insights offered by these authors. The view that is presented here is neither strictly Buddhist nor mainline Christian--it is, though, authentic in its message and presentation. It focuses on the message of Jesus as so fundamentally important that it transcends efforts to enclose it in narrow walls of a single faith point of view. This book is an extremely valuable asset along the personal path of spiritual intimacy with the devine.

Here we have another disturbing attempt to weave new age teachings into Christianity and claim that all paths lead to the same place. They do not. If all paths led to God then Jesus would not have said, "enter by the narrow way".The author calls the Genesis accounts of creation and Adam and Eve a "myth". If one does not believe the Genesis account as fact then why even bother calling yourself a Christian since the whole reason for Christ's coming is explained in Genesis. If Genesis is a myth then it renders the coming of Christ meaningless and Christianity an inept religion. The ideas presented in this book are a heresy to orthodox Christianity and are at odds with the Nicene Creed. I was very disappointed because I wanted to read this book in hopes of finding some new incite and possibly find more evidence that God had revealed Himself to the people of the ancient east. Instead I found yet another attempt to weave the false beliefs and teachings of the new age movement into the truths of Christianity.
