This is a very interesting book, written by Tiziano Terzani, a remarkable man - an Italian journalist working as a war correspondent for Reuter, who spent most of his life in S-E Asia and decided to heed the warning of a fortune-teller and avoid flying during a certain year ... The story of how he managed to travel throughout Asia with other means (quite difficult, given his profession), and the people he met, especially the fortune-tellers he met and consulted in the different places, now mostly as a matter of journalistic curiosity and to see to what extent their predictions coincided ... A wonderful book! I wish another one of his were translated and available, I have it in Italian, "Un altro giro di giostra" (A last turn on the merry-go-round), about his search for alternative cures for his cancer while having the usual treatment at Sloan-Kettering in NY also. There are some interviews with him close to the end of his life on youTube, worth watching - a luminous person.

We absolutely love this author, we also read his book in which he goes on a journey to find a possible ancient / holistic cure for cancer. Sadly he was not successful. Tiziano Terzani was such a wonderful writer, he is sorely missed on our bookshelves but also as a human being, we surely would be friends if he was still alive today. A man with heart and a wonderful way of writing. We would be most happy to receive any suggestions about his writings in German or English.shipping: thank you this book arrived in good shape, the packaging left the corners a little bit in danger of getting bumped, but for us this second hand book purchase was all about the content not the cover of the book. Inside is what counts.We would buy from the seller again.

I cannot express in mere words what this book has done to me. I am about 2/3 through it and really do not want the journey to end. It's not so much the fortune telling but Tiziano's perspective of people and his sorrow over the loss of traditions that are being replaced by "modernization," or Westernization. And what a shame, as he states in the book, losing these ways is like removing a page or chapter from the book of human knowledge, gone forever. He shows through the many shamans he meets, the rulers, the "common" people (like you and me), how these traditions are "weathering" as the West collides into the East, and it's not faring well. Those he meets are still practicing the ways of the earth, they still know our place in this world, this life, and how we fit within it rather than reign superiority over it, but many are dying off and their descendents are taken by westernization and are not interested in carrying on these traditions. The west has lost its ability to perform magic if you will, instead we cure illnesses with drugs that make companies rich rather than through meditation, herbal remedies, spiritual manipulation, knowledge we all once knew. And here in Asia, and in Africa, through the native people of the Americas, Australia, etc. where our old ways are still being practiced, we still have something we could take and bring back if we'd just recognize its value, a real treasure we are so fortunate to still have and one we must grasp before it is too late!One reviewer here mentioned how all of the fortune tellers the author met predicted that he would live a long life, often stating he'd live well into his eighties, but he died a few years ago at the age of 65 from a brain tumor.This is not the first time I've heard fortune tellers predict long lives only to be proved wrong when their subjects die much younger. I had a friend who visited a fortune teller for his 25th birthday. She was extremely accurate about his past and present as well as what she believed would be his future, much of which he had planned but never told her. She told him he would have a very long career in politics. My friend was killed in a car accident while riding in a taxi only 2 months later. Another friend told me while stationed in Haiti many years ago that he had his fortune told with a few of his army buddies. The fortune teller told everyone's fortune but when she got to one of the men, she refused to tell his fortune. He was killed a week later.I don't know, perhaps it's all bunk or perhaps there are folks who can truly see into the future. It's just that maybe they see the future, but not all of them want to tell the truth about when that person will die. Why tell someone they will die young when you can give them hope that they will die old?Tiziano does not have a specific perspective, he's open minded, but he pines for the old ways that he sees were more human, and contrary to what others have written here, he never states he either supports or opposes communism, he simply observes, loves individuals and people, wishes for the days when we could all be connected to the earth again, and each other in a spiritual way, and not for business. And he's open to all possibilities when it comes to spirituality, true spirituality, not the kind that too often is used to control people. He does not dismiss these religions outright, he only notices they always seem to appear as either a way to westernize a country (Christianity) or fight against that westernization (Islam), like polar opposites, but no real balance or the recognition of a people's true will.Whatever your perspective, open your mind and take a wonderful journey with this man. You'll long for a time you may know or remember, or have heard of but wish you could experience too, a time that even existed here in the US for a spell.

I really enjoyed this book and was hooked from early on. I had no expectations as it was given to me as a gift, and was very pleasantly surprised. It's an unusual premise, insightful and very readable. It is written with warmth and humor. I now gift this book to friends, a diverse group, and trust their candid opinions that they have enjoyed it too. Once for the bookshelf for sure.

i would reccommend this book to anyone who enjoys travel narrative and is interested in magic and fortune tellers in asia. Although i can't agree with the author on all his opinions, as he seems to be against the modernization of Asia, i do agree that with the modernization there is a great loss of knowledge of nature. The author seems to have a love/hate thing going with china, doesn't seem to keen on thailand, and seems sad at the loss of how burma used to be. The book is well written and gives some great anecdotal history of asia, as well as illustrates, in part, the difference in the asian mindset when it comes to fortune tellers and magic.

This is the second time I read this book. His is an excellent writer telling us much more than his journey chasing fortunetellers around the world. We learned a lot about Asian history and its culture. Great sens of humour and his humility make this book a great read

I tried to read the whole book in one night but that is not a good tribute to the writer! It is an amazing story. This year I spent a month on Bali and was looking for a fortune teller....there where quit a view but ....... actualy I did not dare going there. Instead of that visit I did a cooking class. At the end we talked a little bit about life etc,, when we said goodbey he warned to look after my hip on the right side.......he was right......he was a fotune teller aswell!

Mystical and entertaining, also informative about the South-East Asian regions well described by the author. Very worth reading, dive into another world!

I knew very little about Leo prior to reading this book. Now, I learned about how great of a player he was, and he got to that level. The book goes in-depth through the story of his life. It was very interesting to read how a 5’7” guy from Argentina became the world’s best soccer player! This is an encouraging story that shows the value of hard work and perseverance. Overall, I enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone interested in the life of Lionel Messi.For full disclosure, I did receive this item at a discounted rate in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

This was a great read. I have been playing soccer since I was little, and he has been one of my favorite players for years. It was really cool getting to read about him. As a huge sports fan I always like reading about the players and what they went through to get to where they are at today. 5 star, highly recommend for any soccer player or soccer fan.

Messi: The Rise to Stardom. The Amazing Story of The Unlikely Rise to Stardom of an Undersized Argentine Kid.Good book about the humble begging of one of the best soccer players in history. Well written, short biography.did get this as a discount price for my opinion.

I got this book for free. I thought it might be good for me to read to my kid and maybe show some pictures, but not a kid book. Maybe more for a highschool kid or a fan to read. Not a hard read, so might be boring for an adult. Very informative.

This book, Lionel Messi: The Rise to Stardom, was written by Roy Brandon. The book begins with a table of contents, which does not contain page numbers on which one can locate the beginning of each chapter; however, on the Kindle version of the book, each chapter is written in a hyperlink fashion. This is done to enable the user to simply click the chapter they are interested in prior to being automatically directed to the first page of that chapter. I consider the hyperlinks to be a nice, easy method to flip to a certain area in this book. Following a short forward for the book, the chapters are in chronological order, starting from birth to near the time of the book publishing (2016). Chapters all contain specific information about integral points in Messi’s life. This book is short and direct to the life of a legend. I enjoyed the lack of filler information in this book, as it brings up excellent points and thoroughly discusses them, without droning on. There were a few spelling/grammatical errors, but not so frequent to be a turn off for continued reading. There were no obvious formatting issues. I enjoyed the setup of the chapters, being in chronological order. In addition, the chapters can be separated in terms of a particular season and stats for pivotal games. I found it cool that each chapter beings with a quote from Messi about information contained in each chapter. There are also a fair amount of great quotes within each chapter from not only Messi, but to those close to him and sportscasters. In addition, I loved the author’s emphasis not only on Messi’s wonderful career as a player, but on what a truly wonderful person he is. Too many people focus on Messi as strictly an athlete and not on how charitable, kind, and hardworking he is as a person. Any adversity not only strengthened his talent on the field, but more importantly, strengthened his character. The downside of this book is that there wasn’t any information that I couldn’t find already floating around on the internet. The positive, though, is that the information is all contained in a fairly concise book format. I enjoyed this book, but I doubt mega fans of Lionel Messi will learn anything that they didn’t already know. If you are someone who is interested in learning about a legend, who you know little to nothing about, I would recommend this book to you.

there are a lot of typos in the book. More like factual typos. E.g. while talking about the world cup, the author starts mentioning barcelona instead of argentina national team, when he should (chapter 8, i think). But an interesting read.

I thought it was going to be a harder reading level. It was for my son but I took it to school so it worked out perfect for them. Great transaction!
