Thaddeas Murfee has sued the Mob and won their casino in LV. His sister,Kiki, is evicted for counting deemed "unfair" because it gives the player a real chance against the odds of winning. As she is leaving, two players follow her and get uncomfortably close. She warns them and there is a shot. One of the two is fatally shot. Thaddeus takes her case, Meanwhile a contract kidnapper is planning to abduct Thaddeas' daughter.Frankly, none of this looks the stuff of happy endings, and of course what the reader is looking for is a credible and smart "happy outcome"This is the first book I have read by Mr. Ellsworth and it was satisfyingly fast moving and exciting that overall it was an enjoyable read.I gave it four stars because the starting point was interesting and I wanted to know what happened-although a happy ending was more than likelyBooks have to be written so well that an added dimension of "observation, perception or a combination of many skills" combine to make aparticularly good and enjoyable read.To give an example-I'm nearing the end of Ian Rankin's "The Falls" and have no idea whodunnit. Or indeed if anything was actually done. Nailbiting and interesting! One fears the worst and hopes for the best, and it is impossible not to be concerned that the central figure's problems might scupper his investigation and/or his career. A likeable cop? Not really, A funny guy? A cunning cop? And so on...I think he's a five but not everyone does. We all have our yardsticks of performance and the final score is a compromise. Even writers who normally tell a tale well sometimes offend or bore. I don't think Mr Ellsworth will do either-certainly this book was enjoyable

The more I read in this series, the more I like it, although I still have a problem with Thad having mountains of money. Yes, he spends it freely to help others and it gives him the ability to do anything he wants but to some extent, it gives the impression that money can fix everything (A million dollar retainer? Here’s a check. Need some pocket money? Here’s five grand.). It’s nice but it doesn’t work that way in the real world.Thad’s facing three major problems here – his estranged sister is charged with first-degree murder and the attorney he hired for her has just been disbarred, Thad himself is under indictment for tax fraud, and the mob wants back the casino he took from them in a lawsuit. But Thad settles the tax fraud and murder issues in no time. What the mob does to get back what it feels is its due is the scariest part of the novel but even that climax is resolved too quickly. I would have liked to see the outcome a little more in doubt before success arrived. At least Thad’s love life seems to be sorting itself out. There’s a good mix of thrills, day-to-day life, and legal stuff here to satisfy almost everyone. There is however, a bit too much of how a casino works in this book for my taste. It’s nice but not necessary information.I’m not really a big fan of legal thrillers. I read them but never actively seek them out the way I hunt for books in other genres. The only legal thrillers that automatically go on my ‘To Read’ list are Michael Connelly’s Mickey Haller books. I grab those books as soon as I can.Now there’s a second entry on that list – John Ellsworth’s Thad Murfee series.

Mr. Ellsworth's Thaddeus Murfee stories require an unusual suspension of disbelief, but they're all very enjoyable potboilers. This one is no exception. Thaddeus is a lot like Superman. You know he's always going to come out all right in the end. The bad guys are really bad and the good guys are really good. That's the way this kind of story should be. If you want education instead of entertainment read Adam Smith or Edward Gibbon.

Taking on the mob, the IRS, yet sensitive to the underdog. That's Thad Murfee. Trusting because he cares, and getting loyalty in return. The characters all play their part in making this jigsaw reveal a warm picture of a man who is resolute and determined to give others a break when no-one else cares. While there are several sub-plots, they collectively build a composite of a man who goes out fighting but never losing his humanity. A heart of gold, he changes lives through compassion. The narrative keeps you riveted with little to make it tedious. Crisp yet painting a comprehensive picture leaving nothing inconclusive. The end whets your appetite for the next installment, like a good read should. There are a few typos which are slightly annoying but these don't detract from your reading pleasure. Highly recommended.

I got this book because I had enjoyed the first book of this series. However, it fell far short of the first one and I was very disappointed. It was as if the author had lowered his standards and was writing to an average reader of middle school level. It was most disappointing to me. The book is about the sale of his casino and the abduction of his daughter, Sarai, Along with finding his sister, whom he represents on a Murder #1 case. All together, it sounded like a good story line and plot. He just never pulled it together, though, and he ended it with a lead in to his next book in this series. I really like stand-alone books, and I don't feel this one was. The typos started to really put me off, also. This is a book that I feel the author just threw out there and expected the readers he had gotten with his first of this series might go along with. I didn't. Although I paid a whole $.99 for this book, it really wasn't worth it! It is just too much fluff and too little thought.

Just finished. Couldn't put it down for more than the time it takes to rejuvenate the sitting still reading requires. The author is able to keep the tension alive even through the mundane necessities of daily living. A rare talent, indeed. I deign to compare him favorably to both Lee Child (action all the way) and Michael Connolly (details that make sense and tension for thrill) which nmeans he is my third go to writer.

I didn't see that this was a Christian leadership book before buying it. I read it anyway thinking that faith and thoughtful leadership can coexist. I still think they can, but this book doesn't do a very good job of picking one or the other. The overall message is pretty much "you don't need permission to act like a leader." It's much more encouraging than it is thoughtful or helpful. There is a lot of repetition and a LOT of biblical references. The leadership advice isn't very good and the biblical references only vaguely reinforce the leadership points in the narrative. If you are a youth minister looking for an introduction to the most basic components of management or leadership to apply in a faith-based setting, maybe you will find this book helpful. Otherwise, I would suggest Start With WHY, or Radical Candor, or Switch, or Difficult Conversations to get a much more practical guide to what good leadership or management looks like in practice.

If you're looking for such "insights" as to "What God Says About Your Identity," this is the book for you. If you appreciate recommendations for Chick-fil-a milkshakes, sentences such as "Awareness is a great first step" and "I want you to imagine yourself five years from now," this is the book for you. The author eked out 225 pages of this stuff, layering in what appear to be sermon set-pieces about "positivity." There isn't a shred of original thinking or research - even in the form of interviews - to be found here. A total waste of money and time.

Excellent book. Heard the author speak about his book on the Andy Stanley leadership podcast and decided to give it a listen. Depending on the audience, this book is probably going to fall short for some. However, for me, I gleaned a lot from the author's experiences, and simply the practical style from which the book is written. To summarize the catch in the book - To lead when you are not in charge takes more introspection of oneself rather than others. How can I improve, how can I serve better - such reflections may not be what others are looking for but was a great reminder in the midst of a serve self leadership culture.I got the audio version, and was very happy with the book. Definitely recommending for those who know they can give more, but feel capped by the boss / leader over them.

Google brought me to this book, and it looked extremely helpful. After starting it however, I found it to be extremely religion focused and unhelpful. I only got about halfway through before having to stop it. The essential message is "you're a vessel of God, he has a plan for you, so just do things your way because itll work out because God wants it to. " Instead of providing real world examples, scientific studies, or any sort of data. The author just shares anecdotal evidence from his own life, and quotes bible passages.Extremely unhelpful with no evidence based tips.

What a great concept for a book and a complete let down. I purchased this book to continue to develop my communication skills. In fact, leading without authority was specifically what I was looking for, so of course I was excited about this book. When I began reading, I discovered that the author is a pastor, which gave me a little pause, but I was hopeful that because the book was not advertised as a book about religion there would be only incidental religious references. The further I read, the more I needed to skip over, until I finally gave up.THIS IS NOT A LEADERSHIP, COMMUNICATION, OR BUSINESS SKILLS BOOK.This is a bait and switch. This is a Christian book that discusses leadership. And its shameful that the author and publisher seem to be okay with conning readers.I'm not sure why people feel that it is okay to inject their religious beliefs into non-religious situations and force their beliefs on unsuspecting participants who, in all likelihood, have completely different beliefs. I am so sick of getting surprise sermons in completely unrelated places.

The bottom line that Clay brings out is that leadership begins before you wear the title of lleader. The best leaders step into leadership roles because they've already demonstrated leadership abilities, not the other way around, so start leading where you are right now. Essentially, it can be boiled down into taking initiative, being a good team member, and helping your leader be a better leader by dint of the support that you provide. Clay nuances it more into the details of what that looks like with skin on, making this a very helpful and encouraging book.

This book was both helpful and humorous, which I greatly appreciated since reading non-fiction isn’t my most favorite thing. This book explains how to start leading right now, no matter what seat you’re sitting in, or whatever your job title might be, and gives applications that readers can start doing right away to gain influence. The thing that makes this book stand out from all other leadership books I’ve read is the Biblical perspective that Clay provides throughout. Not only will those working in ministry benefit from the teaching, but so will business executives, teachers, accountants, plumbers, artists – everyone. If you’ve ever had the thought “if I was in charge…” or “this would work better if…” than this book is for you. Anyone can make change happen if it’s done the right way, and this book will guide you through the process.

By bringing together into one very readable location all the disparate topics needed by MVS systems programmers, Dave Elder-Vass, has done a great service not just to beginning systems programmers but even to experienced people. As with any large body of knowledge, people tend to specialize and often are not equally adept in all areas of MVS. This book addresses enough of each area to assist all programmers with MVS. One problem with technical documentation is that by design, it focuses narrowly on the topic at hand. This book resolves that problem by presenting the design philosophy of each topic and moves in a naturally progressive way from each area to the next, from hardware to MVS internals, to software (both maintenance i.e., SMP/E, and Utilities) to MVS initialization, to JES, networking, and to I/O devices and their management. Each of the 19 chapters presents both the goals of the topic and technical discourse on achieving those goals. When you consider that many books have been written on each chapter alone, you begin to develop an appreciation for the enormous scope of what has been accomplished. (Indeed, at the end of each chapter is a list of many technical references devoted to that chapter's topic). An excellent and indispensable book, this one belongs in every system programmer's library.

and now has been reprinted. It has not been updated. While the basics are still true, many details have changed. For example, there is a chapter on Network Configuration including NCP. The networks of today bear no resemblence to the ones of 1993.I have not seen this book but won't risk money on one.The book can be previewed at David's website.[...]

This is a good book for the system programmers, especially tells you how to look and maintains the mainframe system. But the most information you can find in the IBM white books with more update to date.

I was excited to read this book because I love reading anything 9/11 related and I'm a Schefter fan. But I found it to be unfulfilling at best. The first 50 pages (25% of the book I might add) can be summed up in one sentence - Joe Maio was a great, beloved man. It was as if Schefter felt a duty to drive this point home over and over (and over) again. I understand he likely felt this obligation given the circumstances. But as a reader, by the end of those first 50, I was a little exasperated. And this section left out certain details that made it feel a bit shallow. For example: Schefter talked about how Joe and Sharri were involved in this major fight before his death that apparently almost ended their marriage (from what I gathered from the extremely limited details). Schefter probably didn't want to go into too much detail given the situation, but as a reader I was curious as to what the argument was about. It would have made him and their marriage more relatable. The next several pages focused on how lonely and miserable Schefter was after losing a family friend on 9/11. The book started getting a little better at this point but still trudged along. It picked up, however, as Schefter dove more into his feelings, his dealings with Devon, and his job that demanded a lot of his attention. I was thinking "here we go, getting more interesting."And then, it all went back to Joe. Every other sentence... Joe was this kind of guy, Joe was that kind of guy, women loved Joe, etc etc. I guess the first 50 pages weren't enough. The book had derailed for me. I finished it out and came away wanting to know more about Schefter, his relationship with his daughter, his daughter's relationship with Devon and Sharri, the family dynamics given this situation, etc. Those things were touched on, but never really explored. And we hardly got anything out of Sharri other than how she thought of Joe every day in every situation, all the time.I have to wonder if this book wasn't more of Schefter's way to push her to close the door, which it is quite obvious she has not done (really, she won't change her name? bizarre). I almost came away feeling sorry for Schefter and his situation, but he has an amazing daughter who has a bright future ahead of her and I'm sure that makes it all worth it.

As a diehard sports fan, I am familiar with the authors work. As the result of 9/11, I re-enlisted in the us navy after being out for 13 years. I only tell you this because The Man I Never Met by Adam Schedter touches so many genres that it’s impossible to place it into one category. Sure Adam takes the reader on his personal journey but this literary genius gives us to much more. It’s almost a psychological thriller and most certainly should be read by all psychology students. All I can say is that Mr. Schefter is truly a special man for embracing his circumstances and truly paying tribute to his wife’s ex-husband and family. Adam is a brilliant storyteller and only he could have written this masterpiece. I salute you Mr. Schefter sharing your story and truly hope Sharri, Dylan and Devon embrace and applaud your efforts. On a side note, I surely hope this is the first of many books!!!!

This is a beautiful story of love and loss, from the other side. It takes a very special man to love a widow. I tell this to my amazing fiancé all the time. I couldn’t put this book down. I’m a widow but not a 9/11 widow but I could still relate so much to those feelings and fears that Sharri had raising their son and then ultimately dating and marrying again. Thank you Adam for writing this amazing book.

The Man I Never Met: A Memoir, is a book by Adam Schefter that is both a biography about his wife’s first husband as well as being autobiographical.Sharri Maio and her son, Devon’s lives rose from the ashes of the catastrophe of 9/11 to the zenith of a new and wonderful family. This happened without ever having to forget or stop loving the husband she lost because he died when the World Trade Center was brought down by terrorists.I just couldn’t put this book down. I cried, I laughed and I fell in love with a man I never met because Mr. Schefter presented Joe Maio in such a human way; not perfect, but lovable and decent. Mr. Schefter also comes off as lovable, decent and human as well. My only criticism is that the book wasn’t 500 pages longer!

This is the book that I never knew I needed. It's a story of hope from despair and strength from loss. A wonderful memorial to a wonderful man

Whether an avid sports fan or not, this book is a wonderfully woven story about a man's journey to finding happines in love and the remarkable circumstances surrounding it. An homage to his wife's late husband and his family, Adam bravely opens up about dating and marrying a 9/11 widow and it's implications. Emotional, poignant, courageous and funny, this memoir really helps you gain perspective on what's important in life....and it's not sports.

This is a well written, easy read. The book isn't very long so you can read it in one or two sittings. The story is moving and heartfelt and really has a nice message of how people grow and move on from tragedy. If you are a fan of Adam's, as I am, then this book will really give you insight to who he is as a person and family man. I recommend it highly.

Amazing memoir by Adam Schefter - focusing on his wife who is a 9/11 widow and how he met and married her and also honored her late husband and his family. Filled with raw emotion and incredible candor, yet lots of joy. Could not put the book down. Highly recommend.
