It a great book for beginners , I enjoyed this Book , as you are Reading you are learning a lot and is not difficult to understand the point of the Author does.

Being familiar with XHTML, CSS, and DOM scripting, I thought I'd use this book to learn the next step: Creating JavaScripts that interacted with a server. Unfortunately the first chapter that specifically addresses AJAX, Chapter 8, has proven to be unusable.My recurring analogy for the problem is that of an experienced bicyclist who invites a new rider out for a spin. Almost always the experienced rider becomes tired of waiting for the new rider and so speeds off into the distance. So it is with too many technical books. In the case of technical books, the piece that is too often missing is a skilled technical editor who will enforce pacing and consistency of voice from the first chapter to the last.So it is with "Beginning JavaScript with DOM Scripting and Ajax". The book dumps too many concepts, and the learning tasks required to absorb those concepts, onto the reader in massive undifferentiated piles. For example, by the time the book reaches an AJAX code sample the reader is presumed to have successfully installed and validated the operation of a server (the book mentions XAMPP in passing, then moves on) and be ready and able to understand the operation of JS samples comprising multiple functional sections. (It doesn't help that the JS code samples don't put blank lines between functional sections and are completely un-commented.)I got as far as the book's second AJAX sample before I hit a wall. Regardless of whether I ran the example under XAMPP or from the book's online Web site, the example ran only on Internet Explorer, but not Firefox, Google Chrome, or Safari. It's now up to me to break the book's examples apart and figure out why this is happening. So much for "beginning"…If you're already pretty good with computers and computer languages, and have proven trouble-shooting skills, then you'll probably be able to make use of this book. But of course if you have those skills you don't really need the book in the first place.

This is a very good book if you are looking into getting your JS DOM scripting skills up there. I am writing a mini DOM library..and this book is really helping me out. I highly recommend it.

Title of this book is totally misleading.I don't recommend this book for complete beginners because after few chaptersauthors start to present in front of a reader very complex code examples.Reader even needs to know fundamentals of object oriented programming to understandexamples.I recommend that you watch some video tutorial on JavaScript if you are complete beginner before reading this book.Probably this book is ideal for programmers whose level of knowledge is between beginner and advanced.Authors think that it is better to put JavaScript in head tag.I don't think so. It only means that you must write additional code.Code examples use inefficient programming techniques and obsolete DOM detection techniques.What is good about this book? You will learn how to write cross-browser JavaScript using utility methods.Authors of this book actually don't know how to present information insimpler and cleaner way.

The main problem with this book is: The author introduces a library DOMhelp.js which he wrote nicely but no comment. This library has been used all over the book without stating a single line in the book how some function works. My question to this author is: If I already knew how some of your ultra powerful function is working in the background then why I bought this book but I could just write a book and start making money.Moreover, reading jquery documentation would be a better idea rather buy this book because at least you will know how the function works under the hood.

Despite the spectacular architecture showcased I found the book dull and a bit tedious, it could be because I am architect and I require design processes and also I am familiar with those examples of architecture as I am subscribed to the web paged of the author of the book. If you are not architect then probably you could find the selection amazing.Architecture is about the space and the book is a catalogue of 100 facades with very few interiors. There are descriptions that explain the importance of each selected building separated around different interesting questions but when you see the photograph you mostly see the present in mostly expensive buildings. In the case of Svalbard Global Seed Vault even you can see it has not passed very well the test of future (because warmer days the ice melted and threatened the seeds, showing a vulnerability in the design)I think architecture is mostly spaces focused to cover the needs of humans, so an architecture of the future I think first should focus in what type of human being is coming ahead and then what kind of spaces respond to the requirement of those humans,otherwise we only are exploring constructive systems.

This is a delightful little book featuring a wide variety of innovative ideas in architecture. Most of the buildings actually exist, a few are concept drawings. A wide range of styles and scales and functions are represented. If you enjoy fresh ideas in architecture then you can spend an afternoon very pleasantly by sitting outside on a sunny day savoring these pictures and ideas (or inside by a warm fire if you purchase in winter).The buildings are organized by theme:Extreme Locations (the arctic, mountain tops, very remote places, etc)Reinvention (buildings or building materials creatively repurposed)Get Better (buildings that can impact health and spirit)Pop-Up (tents and pillars)Shape-Shifters (buildings with unusual shapes)Drive (buildings related to cars)Nature Building (buildings which blend with nature or intertwine with nature)Shelter From the Storm (buildings related to climate change adaptation)Shrink (very small buildings)Social Catalysts (community and public spaces)Fast Forward (futuristic demos and concepts)There is a thumbnail index which can help you quickly find a particular building. This is a wonderful collection of a wide range of unusual architectural ideas, from simple metal pods in South Africa to an extravagant wave hotel in Chicago. It includes buildings made from conventional materials that were used in unusual ways to dwellings created by silkworms that could inspire future architecture. The book is meant to spark interest, not to provide detail about the buildings and their construction. As such I like it very much.

very nicely done ... gift for grandson with an interest in architecture ... photos and descriptions are not too much for 11 year old to appreciate This is a nice adult coffee table book or an inspiration for future architects.

Gave this to my 14-year-old son for Chanukah. He chooses to open all his gifts at once (rather than one per night), and this was one of the first he unwrapped. He was so absorbed in it, he had to be prompted to put it down and open the rest of his presents. And after he’d finished, he picked it back up and spent over an hour looking through it. As other reviewers noted, it would be great to have more than one photo per building, but my son dealt with that by looking for additional photos online. The buildings are grouped thematically, so it’s interesting to see how buildings that can seem very different draw on a similar concept or address the same social need. Highly recommended for those interested in the ideas shaping our built environment.

Largely a picture book, with a lot of innovative real and conceptual architectural projects. If you love modern architecture you'll find these projects inspiring and thought-provoking.

Great book , it was a gift for my son who study his third year at the School of Achitecture of the University of Puerto Rico. There he had visited as part of the summer program: Peru, Paris, Barcelona & Londres. I recomend the book.

It's also a book full of valuable information on how to harvest fresh vegetables and salad ingredients literally year-round--yet without an expensive greenhouse or indoor light garden set-up. Coleman combines succession planting (small sowings three or more times, rather than one big endeavor) with cold-frame growing in the winter months. He includes how-tos for building simple cold-frames. Given the fact that he lives in Maine, his advice seems all the more reliable. He believes in simplicity ("If what I am doing in the garden seems complicated, it is probably wrong"), seasonality (tomatoes in summer, broccoli in fall, mache in February) and diplomacy in the garden (which "has more to teach us than just how to grow food"). I love this book! It has taught me many things I did not already know. I have a patio garden behind a condo on a 14X8 concrete slab. This book talks about working with greenhouses and planter boxes throughout the winter in the North where Eliot is from & having great success. I live in the South East where it is much warmer so I am looking forward to having many green veggies over the winter. This book has given me many ideas which I am adapting to my patio on a smaller scale.

Before I tell you how much I adore this book, let me tell you first what some may consider to be negatives.1. Eliot writes in a very conversational manner, and in so doing, he tells of some personal stories (particularly their visit to France). If you are a 'cold hard facts' kind of person and you're looking for a technical manual, you probably will not enjoy this book. It is not a very technical book, though it is filled with a lot of great information.2. If you do not have much of a winter to speak of (say, possibly Zone 9 and above), then this book may not prove to be too applicable to your situation.That's really the only negatives I can forecast for any of you readers out there! Now, on to my review.This book is a fun, easy-to-read manual on how to successfully grow crops year- round, and focuses on the crops that work best in the fall/winter months. You don't have to have a ton of money to do this. Eliot describes both the usage of cold frames and/or 'low tunnels' AKA 'chenilles' in the garden. These methods are described in enough detail that even a novice can successfully utilize them. The lovely thing about these methods is that you are using the warmth of the sun to keep your crops happy and healthy, and not using external heating devices. The list of acceptable crops is pretty expansive. I have read and re-read this book many a winter's evening sitting in front of our fireplace. It's very inspirational!While Eliot is in Maine (Zone 5, is it?) the book can be used for any US zone, with the exception of those lucky temperate zones which never experience a freeze. The tables can be converted to your own zone and your growing method (cold frame/low tunnels)and he explains how to do this. I am in Zone 8, which rarely freezes for more than a day or so, so instead of using cold frames I can instead use the low tunnels, which look like a miniature greenhouse. Mine are only about 2 feet tall in the center and were created with clear plastic sheeting (you can buy in a roll at most any home improvement store) and either PVC or steel rods which make up the 'hoops'. I have had GREAT success with my low tunnels. This is my second year to do this, and I'll never look back, thanks to Mr. Coleman.Last year, by the end of winter, I was treated to chard, broccoli, onions, cabbages, and cauliflower. This year, I have planted many lettuces, more chard, green onions and other crops which can be harvested throughout winter rather than at the very end of it.Some people have complained that they would need to drop a ton of cash and buy a greenhouse. I'm not sure where they would get that idea from this book, since it clearly tells you what to plant, when to plant it, and how to properly protect it...all without going into discussion about investing in a greenhouse. If you are in a cold zone (6 or less) and can't spend a lot on cold frames, I would imagine that you could use old single pane windows or even doors for the glass.

I book this book a few years ago as a present for my spouse, and should have written a review ages ago. But it may be just as well, since I can say that this book survives the test of time and seasons.This book inspired our first hoop house, and it was planted in our zone 6 location in January. We thought it would be impossible to get things going that late in the season, but I have pictures of us with a green bowl of salad with a March snow covering the outside of the hoop house, sort of like Mr. Coleman's photo on the cover.This method of gardening really does work. It truly does extend the harvest period to a four season harvest. His advice is sound as you will end up with healthy, viable seedlings and plants, and you truly will be able to fill your table without spending fossil fuels going to the grocery store for something that's been flown in from California or overseas. There is nothing like eating fresh rainbow chard, beets, and salad from your own garden in DECEMBER. And it is so much more fun to weed the garden when its not 90+ degrees outside:)Mr. Coleman gives charts and graphs, showing which vegetables can survive the colder temperatures, and he also provides suggestions on when to plant these items so that you have successive harvests. Some of the seeds may be harder to locate from mainstream seed houses, but I always find that Gourmetseed has them.In reading the book, his stories about tours in Europe and more, show that he has a tremendous sense of humor and a positive approach. I suspect he and his wife are the kind of people that it would be fun to sit and have a glass of wine with - good natured sorts. The world needs more of them:)I commend Mr Coleman heartily. This method puts food on the table, provides enjoyment for year around gardening, and is organic to boot. WOW.edit to add this thoughtful quote from Mr. Coleman's book:"We live in a world that has practiced violence for generations - violence to other creatures, violence to the planet, violence to ourselves. Yet in our garden, where we have nurtured a healthy soil-plant community, we see a model of a highly successful, non-violent system where we participate in gentle biological diplomacy rather than war. The garden has more to teach us than just how to grow food.

So unless you take full control of seasonal conditions (a real option provided you have the heat and light energy), you still have to get your foliage growth during the growing season, but you can still get other produce, or at least store it better on the vine than in the cold cellar.Eliot Colman has been testing his methods in different parts of the real world, in many different zones, so you know there's something here for your situation. For Love...and Donuts is a great, clean romance. It is a wonderful tale of how Virginia grows as she starts to listen to her heart and puts God back into her life. This story has well developed characters with stand out personalities, a Seattle island as a backdrop and a great story line. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting a quiet escape.To Love...and Renovate is a wonderful, clean romance about family issues and other stresses as the couple continue to work and try to finish the planning 3 weeks before their wedding.The characters are well drawn and very likable but each the secrets and family issues are causing problems. Great story. Plan to read this in one sitting.

I love it when you can buy all the sequels in the set at one time. It was fun reading how all the characters enter twined between each book.

The characters are well written as is the descriptions of the island. I had a problem with the ideas of how the women should be manipulating and changing their boyfriends. The relationships felt unrealistic and saccharine.

I loved how the author played out these stories. I was literally watching these characters come to life and hanging on the edge to discover how it was going to play out.

Sweetwater Island Ferry Trilogy:For Love ... and Donuts #1 - I read the second book first and I enjoyed this one more. The well thought out storylines just felt similar to slipping on a pair of comfy, cozy slippers and sharing a cup of tea. I liked the characters; they were so realistic and human, and worked so well together: Virginia , Tristan and Sam were perfect. Of course, the story needed Jason for to all end well. I found the cottage and the island to be important characters in their own right. This fast flowing, easy to read story was entertaining and enjoyable. I loved that the author gave enough details without doing the daily, boring grind some authors do; writing about every unimportant detail instead of letting time past and writing about the important parts. An enjoyable, clean, happy read. I contacted the author to review her books and received this through Booksprout. 4*To Love ... and Renovate #2 - This story takes place six months after Donuts ends. I didn't get to read the first book of this series, which I think would have made this book more meaningful to me. Well written and easy to read with likable characters and a plot full of happenings. Of course, there's wedding details still to be completed, working at their jobs and trying to wait for the wedding night, why wouldn't there be drama? But there was fun and laughter, too. A good balance throughout the book. I liked Virginia's calm approach to the wedding preparations. Oh, don't forget the elephant in the pink tutu - the renovations. I appreciate this being a clean story, which only needed minor editing. I found this book on Booksprout.co. 4* Update: I reread this after reading Donuts and I liked the story better. I recommend these three in order written since they are about Virginia, Tristan and Sam.With Love ... and Reality TV #3 - This story takes place four months after Renovate ends. I don't really care too much for Hollywood and TV, but this was a local station with a surprise character and a surprise deal. An entertaining, sweet read with plenty of romance and problems for everybody. The storylines were interesting; the characters multi-faceted and there's plenty of emotions running the gamut. I just wish Ms. Mayes would edit her books, the errors do distract from the story. 4*Sweetwater Island Ferry Trilogy end.Unexpected Events - This is a quickly read, sweet romance between old friends. The characters are believable without any stupid dialog or actions. The storyline is interesting. A nice story for relaxing with a cuppa. I contacted the author to review her books and received this through Booksprout. 4*

This trilogy takes you through the ups and down of two families along with their troubled pasts, their current relationships and those relationships that develop into something more for the future. Very sweet and clean romance. This 3 book set is the story of Virginia and Tristan. There are a lot of really good qualities in this set. Communication, forgiveness, trust, all very important. I thought that book two would perhaps be about Samantha, it wasn’t. It carried on the Story of Tristan and Virginia. Once I got through that I was sure book 3 would be Sams story. It did sorta. Love this series - beautiful art and child friendly words and narration ! My kids showed this off at school when we went to talk about Indian festivals.

This series has very negative language. The author could've chosen different and age appropriate words to communicate the story and the message.

I discovered Bhakti's series when I was looking for books to introduce Indian mythology to my kids. They were either too heavy weight or they assumed an existing base knowledge of mythology. Bhakti's book hit the right spot and Durga Puja doesn't disappoint. The illustrations are eye catching and the two fold story of Durga- the celebrating and how Durga came into being is enlightening. My children love the story of Durga and Mahisha esp. my son who was amazed that a 'lady God' could slay! A must read for all young girls and boys who are interested in mythology and / or stories of woman power!

It is a delight to read Bhakti's books. I personally have learnt so much about Indian mythology thru her books. Her books are the first that come to mind as gifts to kids. Children love them. The bright and beautiful illustrations light them up. The story is so engaging and conversational in tone. There is something new to learn and there is always a moral. What more would you want in a book for your kids. Do read " Amma Tell Me About Durga Puja" and learn about "Ma Durga" - the symbol of strength, the protector...

As a NRI mom of 3, I am constantly in the search for kid friendly Hindu mythology books that can be fun but yet educational. The Amma series of books is all that and more. Fun, well written and beautifully illustrated. My children love reading these books. Cant wait for the next one.

Recently, as soon as we got home after attending the Durga Puja celebration, my daughter rushed to grab the book to read the whole story of Ma Durga again.It beautifully narrates the story of good over evil and is a beautiful introduction to this important Indian festival to young children.

Another engaging and informative book in the Amma Tell Me series by Bhakti. Simply written, in poetry form, and colourfully illustrated, the book is easy to read, fun and educational at the same time. A good buy if you have young children.

Another fantastic book by Bhakti Mathur. My six year old son is a big fan of her books and love the simple language and beautiful illustrations! The amma series has really piqued his interest in Indian mythology and helped me share some of my childhood experiences with my son!
