The Girl in the Green Sweater: A Life in Holocaust's Shadow, by Krystyna Chiger Daniel Paisner

Review

“Despite the substantial number of Holocaust memoirs that have been published, The Girl in the Green Sweater manages to touch us in an unexpected way, revealing highs and lows in man's capacity for evil, as well his capacity to love life and other human beings. Through the eyes of the child that Krystyna Chiger was in Lvov, Poland in 1939 we see the whole moral universe.” ―Naomi Ragen, author of The Saturday Wife and The Covenant“[A] gripping memoir. . . Captures both tragic events and beautiful images that continue to haunt the author after more than 60 years.” ―Kirkus“Told from a precocious child's point of view. . . Chiger's seven-year-old cypher possesses a self-awareness that springs from her inner and outer turmoil, capturing well the despair and terror of a life in hiding. With a powerful story and a keen voice, Chiger's Holocaust survivor's tale is a worthy and memorable addition to the canon.” ―Publishers Weekly“An important addition to Holocaust literature that vividly describes a harrowing childhood faced with enormous strength and courage.” ―Michael Bart, author of Until Our Last Breath: A Holocaust Story of Love and Partisan Resistance

As I have been researching the Holocaust, I saw "The Girl In the Green Sweater" had just been released. I believe that was in 2008. Since I had other survivor stories to read, I put off the purchase of this book until recently. Finally, I could wait no longer. The cover of the book has been calling out to me ever since I first saw the title and cover of the book. What an incredible read of history about the Holocaust years. With each Holocaust survivor story I have read, I gain invaluable wisdom, lessons, and more insight for the will to live. I learn that no matter insurmountable odds against the Jewish people, there were those who conquered and overcame those odds. I also continue to learn about the heroes in the Jewish people's lives who risked everything to save and preserve them. This story is really a story within a story. One component of this story reveals the character one of the heroes, Leopold Socha. His continued street smarts and ingenuity was instrumental to keeping his Jewish family alive in underground world called the sewer. Socha's quick thinking along with his survival skills locked him into a protective mode over those that were under his care and psychologically began a redemptive lifestyle from his past that was jaded and full of unlawful actions. The second component is about the people he selected to rescue and begin a long journey to save, protect, and risk his own life. Ultimately, there will be 11 survivors. In those survivors, is one nuclear family. A family of four, the Chiger family, that made it through the Holocaust in tact and alive. This family of four would go on to become one of three nuclear families in their town to survive. Incredible odds against them. Yet, because of the actions of Socha and his team of sewer workers, this family survived. As a teacher, this story and other Holocaust stories have provided me with such rich teaching material about the human complexities. Those who choose to speak out. Those who choose to remain silent. Those who have compassion. Those who ridicule. Those who hate. Those who love. Those that feel a sense of entitlement. And those who continue to love through it all. In this story and others, I have witnessed through the words of the survivors the importance of creating a sense of normal despite such incredible chaos. Ignacy Chiger, a very educated and wise man, continued to teach his children while living in the sewers. Absolutely amazing. His desire to educate outweighed any obstacles he was living through, faced with, and having to overcome while simultaneously dealing with those obstacles. The book first gives the history of their area of Lvov, Poland. A place that is first Russian occupied before the German occupation. The reader will be given history of this land and how it affects the people living in it. Great information to understanding the history of this time period. Once the German occupation occur, there has to be quick thinking and planning in order to even have a chance at survivor. In planning, life in the sewer begins. Such a historical piece of writing and never a boring spot in the storyline.I highly encourage all to read. A life lesson in this story; "Where there's a will there's a way." A timely piece for today's culture that no matter what wrong has been done to you in your life, you can choice to take your life back without revenge.

I watched the Polish movie before reading this book. Credit to the director and writers for getting the movie as close to the book as possible. Only in a few small ways did it differ and those hardly worth mentioning. Most Holocaust memoirs are too painful to read. This one manages to convey all of the horror of the situation without completely depressing the spirits of its readers. It helped me to know that the story had a happy ending--as much of one as it is possible for such stories to have. The family survived as a unit--spoiler--and went on with their lives. Well worth reading!

Krystyna Chiger has written a moving memoir of her family's struggle to stay alive during the Holocaust. The Chigers enjoyed a relatively prosperous life in pre-war Lwow in Poland. Their fortunes turned when first the Soviets occupied the city and then the Nazis. The Chigers, like all of Lwow's Jews, were forced into the ghetto where they awaited certain death. Krystyna's father joined other Jews in burrowing down into the city's sewers where they were met by Leopold Socha, a Polish sewer worker who promised to help them for a price. When the Nazis liquidated the ghetto in 1943, the Chigers and other Jews escaped into the sewer. They spent the following fourteen months underground in the filthy, wet, rat-infested sewer. Krystyna's father served as the ad hoc leader of the Jewish group and played a major role in their survival. Socha faithfully provided them food and supplies, even purchasing them with his own money after the Jews' funds ran out. The group gained their (relative) freedom when the Soviets "liberated" the city in 1944.I enjoyed reading this book immensely. It presents the same events as Agnieszka Holland's film, "In Darkness" (2011) (see my review), but Krystyna Chiger provides many, many details of the group's underground struggle which could not possibly have been included in the movie. If you must choose between the book or film, choose the book.

I enjoyed the book even with the bleakness. But kept leaving it to read other books and articles. It pulled me back and I did this several times. The story never left me during this time. Finally finished it after a few months. Interesting, I have never done this before. Give it a try it is an astounding recollection of how a family and others survived during WWll.Gave it a 3 but closer to four in the rating... at 3 1/2.

Craig has set the bar for hiking guides. He provides a surprising amount of detail on each trail. Looking for similar guidebooks for hiking in other states has been difficult because none contain what I've come to depend on with these hiking summaries. Craig combines photos, maps, elevation graphs, rating, difficulty level, one way or round trip distance, and elevation gain/loss to provide a very handy summary. He also includes the best season for hiking and directions to the trailhead. Most of that information can be found in other books/websites/maps, but you might have to use more than one source to compile all of that. Arguably the most critical element is the thoughtful description he includes - he tells you what he thinks is interesting about the trail and takes you on a mental hike so you can understand what you may experience. If only I could convince him start writing guides for Oregon...

I own a LOT of hiking books for the Pacific Northwest, specifically Washington State (and even more specifically, Eastern WA - but that's another story that some people seem to have a problem with). This is one book I bought especially because the author, Craig Romano, recommended it to me for a hike I was looking to have concerning hiking to a glacier. It doesn't get better than having the author hook you up! Kudos to Craig for being interested in not only hiking Washington but his readers.Like the another book I own, Backpacking Washington: Overnight and Multi-Day Routes, each hike is loaded with information about difficulty, distance, elevation gain or loss, when the trail is open, directions to get there, etc.Romano's clearly written descriptions keep the reader both entertained and educated. His use of topographic maps allow you to see before getting there what you'll be up against. This surely is one of the best parts of the book. You keep writing 'em, Craig, and I'll keep buying 'em.

I have another guide, Exploring Washington's Wild Areas: A Guide for Hikers, Backpackers, Climbers, Cross-Country Skiers, Paddlers, which is another excellent reference for hikers. That book is more comprehensive and a bit larger than this Day Hiking North Cascades: Mount Baker, Mountain Loop Highway, San Juan Islands book. The former, albeit a bit dated (first published in the 90's) covers longer backpacking treks as well as the shorter day hikes that are in the latter (first published in 2008). I just wanted to contrast the two, as they are both excellent guides for different applications.I needed a more portable book to lug around in my backpack featuring shorter day hikes, as I'm lucky if I get one day off per week. I live in Skagit County, right smack in the middle of the hikes featured in this book, and based on others' reviews, I decided to buy this one. I'm glad I did! It is extremely thorough and well-written. The author, Craig Romano, clearly has an appreciation for the area and does a wonderful job of classifying each one of the hikes based on rating, difficulty, distance, elevation, and what season the specific hike is open. There are also other features outlined, such as dog-friendly, bike-friendly, camp locale, etc. There are many photo's showcasing the highlights to each one of these hikes.I have "dogeared" many pages of this book, highlighted the points of interest of hikes that I am interested in, and I have already explored a couple hikes nearby my home (I've owned this book for about two weeks). Mr. Romano's poetic description and insight into all of the 125 featured trails motivates me to want to see most of them. The author also features a segment for many (if not most) of the hikes entitled "Extending Your Trip," which references alternative routes branching off from the main trail. One minor concern one may have with this book is that the map/s showcasing the hikes are zoomed into the hike itself, not mapping directions in detail to the trailheads. That is a small concern, not worthy of removing a star from this review, because in this day and age we have so many other ways to find a destination. Besides, there is a small segment for each hike titled "How to Get There," with written instructions that are both accurate and comprehensive enough to locate the hike. Also, there are GPS coordinates for the technologically advanced.Enjoy this book, I would recommend it to anyone who lives within the area who has a limited amount of time (one-day) off to explore their own backyard. And on a side note, please respect our wilderness and it's habitat. If you see garbage, pick it up. If you see wildlife, don't disturb it. Stay on the trails and tread lightly. I hope my great-grandchildren, and yours, can enjoy and appreciate the privileges we have today!

I really like this book. It has lots of information and the rating of difficulty is good to have. I'm new to hiking and didn't know where to start as far as my ability and and endurance. I went on a trail that was 3 in difficulty and 8 miles in length, it was a little much for me in hindsight. I was proud that I made it and I learned a few things about hiking and my ability. I will definitely keep on hiking and plan to work up to some overnight hikes in future.
