I recently bought this book and have been crocheting up a storm of snowflakes. I love the gallery section (Snowflake Showcase) which allows you to preview all 100 snowflakes. It is fun to see them in not just pure white, but also in pastels. The project gallery in the back offers photo ideas of ways you can use your finished snowflakes, such as coasters, notecard embellishments, as well as ornaments. This section has inspired a couple of holiday gift ideas for me. I have also made one "snowflake" in worsted weight yarn and can see potential in using some of the patterns in a larger scaled project, such as an afghan. The instruction section is arranged with three levels of difficulty. There are 30 beginner patterns, 40 intermediate and 30 advanced. Each pattern has a clear, colored photo of the snowflake. The instructions are very clearly written and so far I haven't come across any errors. In addition to the written instructions, each snowflake pattern has a symbol chart, which I find helpful. Very uniquely and adding to the fun, each pattern in this book has a snow or ice related name, such as Droxtal, Ice Prism or Boreas, along with a short definition of the name. And of course, each snowflake has exactly six points. (I mention this, because of another crochet pattern book that features snowflakes with more than six points.)This is a wonderful book, both as a pattern book and as a picture book.2-NOV-2012 UPDATE: During my recent surgery recovery, I gave myself the goal of making all 100 snowflakes. I can now report I have done this....I've made all 100! I used Size 3 thread and a 2.25 mm hook for all snowflakes, so mine are a bit bigger than those in the book. Depending on the complexity, each snowflake took me somewhere between 15 and 45 minutes to stitch. (Weaving in ends and blocking added another few minutes each.)I've uploaded a few photos to Amazon, including a series of photos taken of snowflakes before, during and after blocking. I highly recommend blocking! I used heavy spray starch, spraying them while they lay on a cloth, then pinning them to the blocking boards I made using the book's instructions. The spray starch gave the snowflakes a bit of body and helps them hold their nice shape, without making them stiff.I did want to report my experience with the patterns themselves. I used a combination of the written instructions and the charts, sometimes relying more on one than the other, but generally consulting both. With only a few exceptions, I had no troubles with either. Considering that there are 100 patterns, the fact that I found errors on only five of them, is quite remarkable. ~ On Snowflakes #21, #43 and #73, the written instructions did not agree with the chart on Rounds 5, 2 and 5, respectfully. Snowflake #66 had an unnecessary written "fasten off" instruction on Round 3, the pattern having been an expansion of the previous snowflake. And Snowflake #74's chart had an unnecessary "floating" chain 3. (13-JAN-2013 Update: Pattern #84's written pattern does not match the chart on Round 1)And, if you are wondering what I'm going to do with 100 snowflakes, most will be going to my church's annual holiday bazaar, but a few will grace my own Christmas tree. Happy Stitching!

I had no idea how to crochet when I bought this book, but I brought it along to pass the time on a weekend car trip. Within an hour or so, I had learned the basics of crochet and was well into my first snowflake! By the end of the trip, I had made ten different snowflakes - they came out beautifully, and I was amazed by how easy it was to learn how to create them. The patterns are lovely and unique - the fact that the author created 100 truly distinct patterns is very impressive; each one is gorgeous, and they all really are different (just like real snowflakes!). And if 100 isn't enough, there is even a section in the book with advice on how to go about inventing your own original snowflake designs. The Showcase section is a great visual guide that you can use to pick out which design you'd like to try, or if you're just learning, you can start with the first pattern and work your way forward through the book, because they are all organized by difficulty. This book would be a wonderful gift for the crocheter in your life (or someone who might LIKE to crochet), and is also a perfect way to create your own handmade gifts. I love this book, and look forward to using it for many more crochet projects!

First, the good things: (1) Great production value -- nice heavy pages & excellent photos; (2)a "gallery" of snowflakes in many colors so you can see the variety & which ones appeal, (3) really excellent instructions with both written instructions and a diagram, (4) some of the "advanced" snowflakes are as pretty as any I have seen, (5) everything is well explained to newcomers in snowflakes and/or thread crochet, (6) many of the snowflakes hold their shape well and that provides instant satisfaction. The things that I was not happy with: (1) With a hundred snowflakes, I would have expected a lot of variety, but instead they are all very much alike. They change in the details, and they're nicely designed, but if you compare them with other snowflakes out there (search "crochet snowflakes"), they are way too similar. (2) None of them have any spires. Complex borders are one of the coolest (haha) things about snowflakes, spires included, but these are just missing. In general, the borders are solid and similar. (3) They have a very limited vocabulary of stitches. For example, there might be one approximation of a picot loop/fan in the whole book, and there is not a single cluster stitch. For people who are new to this and don't know what I'm talking about, these techniques are not hard, and you could easily learn them from the basic skills in this book. Why on earth does she not include these beautiful and easy to learn types of stitches/pattern elements? That would make for more variety. (4) The "beginner, intermediate, advanced" snowflakes should really be called, "small, medium and large." I am not the greatest crocheter in the world, but IMO there are no advanced snowflakes in this book. (5) These snowflakes seem to be designed for instant gratification (which is why they have no spires, which take longer to complete than non-spire patterns). There could really have been a progression from easy to advanced, introducing new elements as you went along, but the patterns are all meant to be completed in an hour (depending on your speed, experience and skill) and that means there can't be some of the best elements in snowflakes. (6) The section on designing snowflakes is useless, except for the part that suggests you use these as a base and add your own borders. Now if only they would show you some of the neat things you can do on borders, that would be great.I'm glad I got this book and have made a number of the snowflakes in it, but I was frustrated because it wasn't what it could have been.

#30,643 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I was referred to this book by a friend of mine who knew I liked the books of Malcolm Gladwell. I first read it near about when it came out, around 2002, and just got around to re-reading it. I had only remembered two of the stories from the book, so it was very similar to reading it again for the first time. The theme of this book is reflected in its three parts: Fallibility, Mystery and Uncertainty. Each part talks about a particular aspect of Gawande’s career as a surgeon that deals with the less-certain side of being a doctor. Each concept is accompanied by one or more anecdotal references to his own real-life cases that illustrate his point brilliantly. And that point is that doctors know a lot - but they don’t know everything. Their education and practical experience can help prepare them with knowledge, but skill comes from years of learned real-world practice. I could really sympathize with him and the stressors he has to deal with. I’ve been guilty as well of feeling my doctor must and should know everything that is right for me to do. The truth is a lot more complicated than that. This book doesn’t even take into consideration the patient frustrations with healthcare - cost, attention, etc. It really does focus on pulling the screen back and giving you a glimpse into the vast uncertainty that accompanies this sometimes wondrous profession. This is NOT a book that says, “I’m a surgeon. Here’s all the supercool things I’ve done and this is why I’m awesome and don’t you wish you could get me as your doctor?” This book shows the doctor, warts and all, and makes them much more human.

People usually are either one of these things or the other, and it's not so often that we find someone who can both do things AND write and so expose us to a world that we might not have seen otherwise.***What of this book?1. It is written in three sections.a. Fallibility (The shortcomings of physicians)b. Mystery (Mystery Illnesses)c. Uncertainty (Gray areas and diagnostic uncertainty)2. I get the distinct impression that the author wrote a series of essays and then chose the best of them as could be fit into this book. It's like he didn't write only as many "songs" as he needed for this "album." He had a whole bunch of them in a vault somewhere and then just pulled some number of them together and then made the concept of the "album" after the fact.***What can we learn from this book? Much, as it happens. I can give some of the things that popped out at me the most1. Medicine is an empirical science. A lot of things are learned/ decided on the fly and with more information they might have been decided differently. There are no algorithms or simple answers.2. There are questions about ways that surgeries can be set up. Do you train one surgeon to do many things, or do you train many surgeons (teams?) to do one thing only. The discussion of the hernia repair team and the way that they improved their efficiency by doing the same thing OVER AND OVER again (p. 35) is food for thought.3. The training of physicians has to happen on *someone*. And the training for procedures to be done on humans can only be done on humans. And yes, people who are poor and unable to purchase their own insurance are more likely to be guinea pigs. And that's just the reality of things.4. There are no clear mechanisms to sanction physicians when they are past their prime and start killing patients. This book is about 15 years old, but then (as now), government accountants and colleagues will catch the physician before any ethics/ disciplinary board.Verdict: Recommended. The fact that this book is still high priced in spite of being 15 years old is its strongest recommendation. The present reviewer is offering one more.

The author writes from the viewpoint of a resident and young surgeon covering such topics as When Doctors Make Mistakes, When Good Doctors Go Bad, Pain, Nausea, Obesity and the Ethics involved in end-of-life decisions. His excellent writing makes the hospital setting and the O.R. come very much alive. Doctors are portrayed as human beings with a high fallibility factor and surgeons are portrayed with very high confidence levels. Yet the doubts, the anxiety and the frustrations of the medical profession are also expressed very eloquently. His insight into the medical world is almost profound and his empathy with the patient is palpable. Gawande has written other medical books for the popular market that have gotten good reviews. I hope to read them soon.

As a former Navy Corpsman (Medic) attached to the USMC infantry, I have always had an interest in medicine, and science in general, and this book was a great insight into the medical and surgery field. As a young Corpsman with the Marines, I was thrust into medicine, and learned very quickly what did and did not work. "Watch one, do one, teach one" is how we were instructed to learn medical practices. From diagnosing (even though we couldn't "diagnose" as Line Corpsmen...we still did essentially) cellulitis, learning to place sutures, to removing infected toenails, I made mistakes, but generally our medical skills quickly flourished, and we were able to practice outstanding medicine for the grunts.Atul writes about this, and the decisions he had to make, which affect him to this day. As a surgeon and author, he actually cares about his patients, which is a great thing to have as a medical professional. While he doesn't touch on this very much in his book, his caring about the patients and following up is the mark of a true caregiver. For it is those doctors, medics, corpsmen, nurses, and other medical professionals that actually care and are empathic with their patients, yet know how to distance themselves when needed, that operate the best and can change medicine for the better.A truly great read, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the healthcare system, surgery, medicine, and anyone who has ever worked in the medical field!

The Final Call: Hockey Stories from a Legend in Stripes, by Kerry Fraser

Review

“Kerry brought tremendous enthusiasm and energy every time he officiated. I was a younger player at the end of Kerry’s officiating career but it was very clear to see his passion for what he did and for wanting to be the best he could be every time he took the ice. He always took the time to explain things when it was needed and remained professional at some of the most intense moments. He was fair and accountable, which is all you could ask for from any official, and of course he never had a hair out of place.”—Sidney Crosby“I always felt Kerry understood the psychology of hockey, and was always aware of the intimidation factor that was being presented by the teams or certain players. Kerry had the ability to maintain complete control of the game. I really believe he wanted the players themselves to play the game the way it was meant to be played. With courage, honour, and respect.”—Mark Messier“I always felt comfortable when Kerry Fraser was refereeing a game. He was in control of the situation and very communicative to the coaches. He made a very difficult job look easy because of his control and style.”—Scotty Bowman“A good referee makes the game better. Kerry Fraser was a great referee. He allowed the game to be played without prejudice. He retires with many admirers in the game, which is testimony to the high standard he held himself to!”—Bobby Clarke“I can’t think of anyone who, while making his living inside the game of hockey, did it with better intelligence and perspective. Every time Kerry stepped on the ice to do his job—one of the hardest in sports—his analytical approach, his feel for the game, and his compassion for the players, set him apart. He was notoriously well-groomed, of course, but even more well-respected.”—Glen Sather

As a former ice hockey referee myself, I can relate to a lot of what Kerry Fraser has to say. I watched him over his career and rarely disagreed with him. I admire him as an official. I always felt he was fair and unbiased. I would recommend this book to anyone. Over the years ice hockey referees have gotten better thanks to the standard that Mr. Fraser set. This book shows how incredibly tough this job is and how dangerous, but Kerry always seems to keep his sense of humor.

One of my favorite sports books so far! Great insight into the on-ice world of Hockey and how a ref really works. This is one of the toughest sports to ref and Kerry was one of the best ever. The book tells a lot about the game but also gives insight into what a refs life is like around the game. I love these types of sports books because they tell you the real story. If your a hockey hooligan or have one your looking to buy a gift for, then pick up this book!

This was a "like new" purchase from a seller through Amazon, and I discovered it as a recommendation from other sports items I have searched for.Hockey is my favorite spectator sport, and this book approaches the game from the referee's point of view. I always felt that Kerry Frasier was an excellent official, and reading about his career puts a new perspective on how I now view a game. The book is filled with tidbits and highlights that I remember as a hockey fan, and he approaches his life with humor, selflessness and generosity to both his fellow refs and the players he faced through his 30 year career.I highly recommend this book to all hockey fans.

I loved Kerry Fraser more before I read this book. I completely respect the work that he did as an NHL ref and I am sure that he was held in high regard by players and coaches. I just wish that he wouldn't have taken every opportunity to toot his own horn in this book. I guess as the author you can do that but it got to be a little off-putting.Aside from Fraser stroking his ego, the book was a quick and entertaining read. I had hoped for more "behind the scenes" material about the players but in hindsight I was probably dumb to think that a referee would be able to provide the amount of material that I was looking for in that regard. I think I will try Sean Pronger's book for that type of coverage.

Worth the time and money for NHL fans (me!). Mr. Fraser clearly loves the game,as I do. His positive feelings for many oft-penalized players is insightful. His on-ice verbal interaction with the players was fascinating. I am a 60-plus-year Leafs fan and I forgive him the "call". He explained his position and consultation with his colleagues very well.More information about his negative feelings for Steven Walkom and his bosses would have been welcome. Sorry about the pun!

I loved Mr. Fraser's book! Everything from his personal stories about his career, the chapters about the Rangers, Hockeytown USA, the meadowlands, buying Mike Keenan's old house to his stories I can certainly Identify with and that's living in Southern New Jersey.A very neat and informative book for hockey fans of any kind!

There are two types of sports biography: the honest, no holds barred, locker room talk exposed, funny stories and then there are the "golly, my life has been swell and I'd never say anything negative about anyone because I've been blessed" type. This book is the one of the "everything is swell" types and it makes for a somewhat boring read. There were a few stories that were interesting but for the most part I found the book to be just Fraser talking himself up. Not poorly written but simply not my cup of tea.

Fraser wrote an entertaining book, and he has great hair. He makes fun of his hair a few times in the book.I started watching hockey back in 1990 and very quickly I considered him to be the best referee in the league. I'm happy to support him by buying and reading his book.

This seems to be a good, quick guide to bullet journaling. The author jumps right in. This was the first book I had read about bullet journaling, and I feel like I have a good understanding. However, there were enough typos and grammatical errors that some parts needed an occasional pause or re-read. Also, when discussing the various methods (Carroll, Alastair, Calendex) there were no images to illustrate these concepts. I found myself still having to pause and go to Google.Recommended for a quick guide.

I first heard of bullet journal from a friend. The way she explained it made it sound so complicated that i thought it wasn't for me. Luckily i came across this book and thought i should give it a try. This book has helped me start my first ever bullet journal. I like the way the concept was broken down and made simple to understand. What i like most with the journal is how it helps me out my thoughts in perspective. Great read indeed.

I have been looking for this type of guide, and finally got it. Minimalist bullet journal is an eye opening guide, that helps me to improve myself and teach me how to maintain the lifestyle too. That helps me to recover my wrong decisions taken past of my life. When i start following this hacks my entire lifestyle changed. I am very happy to have this it's really a useful guide with cool methods.

It's really motivating guide book. I started just a week ago and i feel my potential for work has increased and i like the methods april wills described. And appreciate the writings.

This was definitely an enjoyable read. I like the tone the she uses and how descriptive she gets with complicated processes. I'm definitely starting a bullet journal after this

Just a heads up to those bullet journalers out there the dots are quite far apart so there are less on the page. It works well for me and my needs, but in case you like them closer together.

I usually get so busy and stressed out each day. I operate a local restaurant and boy some days can be so physically and mentally tasking.... especially mentally. Started keeping a bullet journal and though the stress hasn't magically vanished, I feel more light headed and focused any day I use the journal. The trick I use is "if it isn't in my journal, I don't do it". Having this mentality I have increased focused to a great extent. Thanks for the perfect guide in this book

The minimalist approach of this book to bullet journalling is simply amazing. I'm not so artistic and most times find it hard to come up with a decent design element. Following the strategies described in this book, I find that I can still keep my journal simple witg just the basic necessary symbols. I think I'm gonna have to introduce this to my bff
