This book gives what the title promises, hope. In this collection of quotes on many different Biblical topics, such as prayer ("a defiant alternative to sinking into the deep waters"), anxiety ("the antidote is abundance"), and generosity ("Give it away gladly"), we are reminded that God is in charge, and that knowledge creates new possibilities. God transforms lives, and so we should not fear. On the chapter entitled, "Jesus," the reader will learn that "Jesus is enough." He was not overly "nice," however, but "...a dangerous alternative kind of power that was prepared to name names . . ."). This hope is all-inclusive, rooted in neighborliness. This book will make you think: "The church is to be odd in the world, noticed in the community for walking to a different drummer." What is "Neighbor Love (chapter eight)? What is a key act of love? Why are hospitality and vengeance juxtaposed? Why are we given the commandment to love one another? If you love books you can read in small bits and pieces and put down and think about, this collection will stir your heart and mind with hope. I will return to it again and again.

Walter’s the best! In any format and collection. This volume would’ve been more helpful, however, it the editor had indicated more about sources and context.

Brueggemann does not do this. He deals with hard issues and asks tough questions.
