In this book, author James L. Neibaur provides a well researched discussion of all the Elvis Presley films. You get production background facts, date released, director, actors, length, cost, songs and how the soundtrack recording charted. The bulk of each chapter (one per film) covers the plot and the author’s opinion of the final product. I doubt that everyone will agree with all of Mr. Neibaur’s comments, but I felt that the author was on target with most of them. I was looking for a book that would do more than just give me a one paragraph summary of the story line and so was pleased by the depth and length of the plot discussions. A welcome surprise is a list of the songs in each film shown in the order they were performed (it is too bad that some of this information is wrong). In most cases, the soundtrack records have the songs out of order. I have no idea why RCA thought this was a better idea. Since the songs flow with the storyline, it seems that the record releases should mirror that same concept. Some songs were not found on a soundtrack album because they were performed by another artist in the film. The author also includes these titles in his music lists.A small negative is that while the author gives us a lengthy list of the actors, he only shows the names of the major characters in each film. I have always found it interesting to learn which supporting parts were given to some of Elvis’s buddies. The other missing, for some fans, is the lack of color pictures.Highly recommended for anyone who has an interest in these films even though there are some errors in the book.

I'll admit I'm a die hard Elvis fan and was interested in getting this book as it seemed like it'd have some behind the scene stories and people who worked with Elvis. It had some but not enough, and it was mostly a critical assessment of Elvis's movies. Some, the author liked and some, he did not like. I was hoping that for the price, it was a more detailed book but it just didn't live up to my hopes.It had some errors, such as saying Sonny and Red West were brothers, although any serious Elvis fan knows they were cousins. He credits British songwriters Chris Arnold, David Martin and Geoff Morrow with writing the "Clambake" song "A House That Has Everything," which was written by Sid Tepper and Roy C. Bennett. Arnold, Martin and Morrow would write a few songs for Elvis's 1969 recording sessions at American and again for his 1973 sessions at Stax, but they did not enter the Elvis world until two years after "Clambake."Likewise, he ascribes all the Elvis songs for the "Speedway" album to Mel Glazer and Stephen Schlaks, although they only wrote the title song. The rest of the "Speedway" songs were supplied by Elvis's usual stable of writers including Tepper and Bennett, Ben Weisman and Sid Wayne, and Joy Byers, wife of producer and songwriter Bob Johnston, who claimed he really wrote the songs credited to his wife, reason he belonged to one licensing organization, whereas Elvis's music publishing was through a rival licensing agency. (Never mind the fact Elvis actually owned a music publishing firm that was licensed as well by the agency that Johnston was a member of, meaning there wouldn't have been a conflict.) Only one of the last four songs that made up the "Speedway" album was intended for the movie. The remaining three included an outtake from what is now know as "The Lost Album," the song "Goin' Home," written by Joy Byers for "Stay Away, Joe," but not used in the movie. And "Suppose," one of Elvis's most affecting recordings, not written for any of the movies but a song recorded in 1967 possibly for a non-soundtrack album that was derailed by Presley's manager. The song was written by George Goehring and Sylvia Dee, who had also written Skeeter Davis's pop-country classic "The End of the World." That song was written by Dee about the loss of her father and was and remains a devastating work. "Suppose" is no less devastating and is even believed by some to have inspired John Lennon to write "Imagine." The error on songwriting credits also misses a minor hit for Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn. If those names don't sound familiar, they are the writers of the song "The Morning After," which was from the movie "The Poseidon Adventure" and was a hit for Maureen McGovern. For "Speedway," Kasha and Hirschhorn wrote the song "Your Time Hasn't Come Yet Baby," and it was their only song recorded by Elvis. Neibaur also loses a point with for not pointing out that actor Norman Rossington, who was in Elvis's movie "Double Trouble," was also the only actor to work in an Elvis movie who also worked in a Beatles movie. Norman played the Beatles's harried manager in "A Hard Day's Night," a role in which he did so well, one could actually believe he was their manager! He also loses another point for not mentioning that Elvis specifically asked for actor Burgess Meredith to work with him in "Stay Away, Joe," which isn't as bad as Neibaur makes it.One shouldn't make errors of this nature, especially since this seems to be a more serious book about Elvis's movies. Most of Elvis's movies were nowhere near as bad as some of the critics made them out to be, although granted, some of the movies and the songs, could've been better. I was hoping there would've been a light shed on some of the movies which ended up different to what was originally intended, lighter as it were. "Roustabout," for instance, was said to have been a much darker movie that had been planned since 1960 and before Elvis was involved. Elvis likely would've preferred the original version to the version he filmed. Even so, there were some dark scenes in "Roustabout," such as likable Joe (Leif Erickson) who tries to commit vehicular homicide on Elvis just for looking at and talking to his daughter (Joan Freeman) when they have their first meeting on the highway. The carnies didn't seem like nice people away from the civilians. That was a story worth focusing on. Maybe the dark side was a little too close to Parker personally. Another mystery that was worth exploring was what happened to actor Ed Faulkner in the movie "Easy Come, Easy Go?" What? You didn't see him? Watch the opening as Elvis sings the movie's title song. Faulkner is sitting in the boat with Elvis and "singing" the song. Afterwards, he disappears."The Elvis Movies" is not a bad book but neither is it a great book. It's like a lot of things about Elvis. It leaves you wanting to know more, and as we get further and further away from the people who worked with and knew Elvis, worked in the recording studio or in the movie studio with him, the less we'll have to know about those ventures and what they could've told us. And that is a loss no one can afford.UPDATING MY ORIGINAL REVIEW: When I wrote the above review, I was too harsh in rating it two stars. It had some errors, which I note above but I also made a couple of mistakes which Mr. Neibaur kindly pointed out to me. He correctly pointed out actor Ed Faulkner was not in "Easy Come, Easy Go," which I thought he was, although he isn't in it at all. Likewise, he mentioned there was some detail about the original script for "Roustabout" that I missed, and again, I contritely apologize to him for that. But, I still stand by comments on the songwriter errors and Sonny and Red being brothers instead of cousins. Even so, the book deserves a better rating than I gave it originally and I'm now changing that to four stars. There was more I wish could've been added but as I said, this book leaves you wanting to know more about that part of Elvis' life and career. Elvis' movie career could've been and should've been better but some of the movies there are have been unfairly maligned. Only a handful were truly bad, most were enjoyable. I'm leaving the original review as it was written but I do endorse this book, despite what occasional errors there are. The errors are not that major and I should've been more fair in my review.

Granted, there is an inescapable sense of squandered potential that permeates formula affairs like HARUM SCARUM and STAY AWAY, JOE. Yet there’s much to admire and enjoy in FLAMING STAR, KING CREOLE, JAILHOUSE ROCK, VIVA LAS VEGAS, LOVING YOU and others.For those who might question whether Elvis’ filmography worthy of a book-length study, the answer is yes. Even the weakest efforts reveal a lot about how a “commodity” like Elvis was molded and marketed for consumption by the general public. By closely examing each film in chronological order, Neibaur underscores how Presley’s desire to grow as an actor and artist was thwarted by the success of his lighter “make ’em fast, make ’em cheap” fare. G.I. BLUES, for example, made more money than the superior if atypical FLAMING STAR.Providing plenty of production data, quotes from associates, and critical evaluations, THE ELVIS MOVIES does an excellent job of examining the peaks and valleys that constituted Presley’s film career. And despite popular consensus, there were definite peaks. While Elvis certainly had his share of clinkers, his best movies showcase his magnetic talent, evidence why he was (and continues to be) a revered, iconic entertainer.

I admit it. I’m a sucker for a good fairy tale and the Cinderella story has always been one of my two favorites (the other is Beauty and the Beast - because of the Disney version where Belle is as much of a book lover as me, but that a tale for another time). No surprise that when a whole anthology of Cinderella tales came along I simply had to buy it. Kingdom of Glass and Ashes: A Limited Edition of Cinderella Retellings (Kingdom of Fairytales Book 1) is that anthology. Happily this is not your Disney tale (as frankly I love that too much to have it simply be regurgitated). Instead it’s a set of wild imaginings that are clear variations of the classic fairy tale. Three of these are by authors I adore (and I think have read all they’ve published), J.A. Armitage, Holly Hook and Anna Santos, so I pretty much had a guarantee that the set would be more than worth its price. I was totally correct. All three of these (not surprisingly the first stories I read in the anthology) are a total blast. They’re also quite different. Thus in Holly Hook’s Ugly, we get a reverse fairy tale that features the story of Cinderella from the perspective of an ugly stepsister. Trust me that the Cinderella (Syndie) in this version is no sweet innocent - and neither is Calvin her “Prince Charming”. Instead you’ll find yourself rooting for the sister, Ellia, and for Jasper (who turns out to be much more than expected). Wonderfully written this was a total blast. J.A. Armitage’s contribution, Charm (also the first of her Reverse Fairytale stories) does its variation differently. On the most obvious level, the genders are reversed with Prince Charming being replaced by Princess Charmaine and Cinderella by servant Cinder. That's minor though, as this is a tale on many levels. First, Cinder is a Magi, one of the repressed minority with magical abilities. Next, well let's just say that the King and Queen here are not the jolly versions of the Disneyfied tale. No, this is a story with many layers, and lots of twists and turns, some quite a shocker, especially at the ending. This is all strong stuff, and it’s wonderfully written. Then finally (for now) there’s Anna Santos’ Chasing Cinderella. This time the twist is that the lead here, Odette Charming, is a modern day descendant of Cinderella (and her family has the glass slippers to prove it). What we end up getting is a not-charming love interest (Carl), inter-dimensional “slipper travel” to a land with an elf prince named Edrahil who is pining for his destined love, and a story that eventually ends up back in our Earth after following along a plot that’s totally unexpected in its twists and turns. Totally wonderful stuff. Frankly I can already tell that this whole anthology is wonderful stuff and, but for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed, I could go on and on with praises - the anthology definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that this anthology is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend.

Cinderella in general is my second favorite fairy tale princess, but these retelling are just hot hot hot! And I've been in live with books before but this set of novels will be at the top of the list for a long time coming! Absolutely recommend to everyone! Get sucked in and BE A PRINCESS!

A new retelling of the Cinderella fairy tale with a dragon prince, two not-so-nice sisters, an indifferent father and a not-as-indifferent mother, a beautiful fairy and an evil darkness that is spreading throughout the lands. A well told tale that was entertaining and romantic and is just the beginning of more interconnected retellings. Nice!I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Review of Audiobook Version of Charmed by JA Armitage: This audiobook draws you in & keeps you captivated till the end. I'm hoping the author continues to turn the other books in this series into audiobooks. A highly intriguing reverse fairytale that is a fabulously adaptation of the original Cinderella. Brimming with magic & suspense a spellbinding intoxicated read. The narrative between the magi & nonmagi is well established & creates a riveting plot with unexpected twists. The writing style is unparalleled & fits the genre perfectly. The narrator did well with the main character voice Charmaine, however, a lot of the supporting characters voices could use a lot of fine tuning. It was like they were screaming & it was awful to hear & took away some from the story. The background & genre were well captured in the MC'S voice. The pace & tone was very good. I recommend polishing up the supportive character's voices as it would make it a five * all around. Overall, a fun & entertaining listening read.

Very charming! But don’t expect a fairy tale ending (yet)With her older sister dead, Princess Charmaine is now heir of the throne. Unwillingly. For the sake of political stability of the kingdom -and of course to produce an heir at some point in the future- she needs a husband. There is going to be a ball and a hundred (!) suitors have been carefully selected and invited. But there is someone else, who is definitely NOT on the list…I really liked the idea of a reverse fairy tale. And I wasn’t let down. Wow. It was amazing! Exciting! A bit of fantasy, a bit of romance, a bit of mystery and a lot of suspense. I loved it! The story will continue in book #2, so I’m looking forward to that. ‘Charm’ made quite an impact on me! The story stayed with me long after I finished it.

I love fairy tales, retellings, and anything based on them. Reverse fairy tales - fantastic. I have read only one selection of Kingdom, Ugly by Holly Hook, and it was excellent. I have liked everything Holly has written, and this is no exception. Her characters are always fully developed and the storyline is well written. Ugly has hints of the original Cinderella, but goes way off in it’s own world. Hated for it to end, much too short. Looking forward to reading all the stories. And Kingdom is only book one!!

I never knew Cinderella could be such a variety of stories. I'm not sure of my favorite one... Maybe the godmothers side? Or Cinderella the assassin? Definitely want to read the sequel to a few of these. Amd all of the boxsets 😊

This book has very attractive photo's and a good section on formulas and recipes but it doesn't bring the two together. If you find a nice picture of a patina you then need to find the recipe at the back of the book using a strange numbering system. Also a great deal of information is throughout is simply repeated.The author obviously has some great techniques but the publishers have presented it in their typical flowery manner - big on pictures, headlines and formatting but low on detailed content.As with many Interweave jewellery publications they are pitched to absolute beginners but their marketing suggests intermediate or advanced.

This book has everything in it that an advanced metal artist might want to know about the process and use of patinas on steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, brass (230 and 260), bronze (220 and 655) and sterling silver.There are two reasons I did not give this amazing and informative book the full 5 stars: the first reason is that the book had nothing on Argentium silver or any of the newer 'sterling' silver alloys. Zip. Nada. Bupkiss. I guess it's going to take biting the bullet to purchase some Argentium sheet and taking careful notes on how it reacts to the various patina recipes. The other reason I'm not giving this book that 5th star is because it does not have much information at all for a beginning metal artist who is starting out working in the potting shed, the laundry room or a corner of the garage. The list of space and equipment required reads more like a lottery jackpot wish list for so many of us than it does a list of things we could actually manage to get together. I guess those of us who usually have to make do will carry on and continue to let ingenuity be our guide and keep hitting those garage sales.

This is a beautiful looking book, with lots of nice photos and examples of patinas, but I wouldn't recommend it. My critiques of it are:1. If you own a patina chemical that is used in the book it is impossible to simply look up all the recipes that the specific chemical is used in. You have to look through the hundreds of recipes and note which recipes use the chemical, thereby reverse engineering it. This is slow and frustrating.2. A lot of the recipes are not "Reactive Patinas", but actually are either paints or pre-made patina products made by specific manufacturers. This seems more like a description of various products that are available, rather than a tool to learn how to create your own patinas. I guess I am more interested in having a few chemicals that I can use to patinate stuff in my shop, not just paint it with a stain.3. There are lots of photos of beautiful jewelry and sculpture pieces, but they are out of context: if you want to replicate the patinas on them, good luck. It would be helpful to have a reference to show which of the hundreds of recipes could be used to create the effects on the featured pieces.

This book is more technical than I expected and covers chemicals I don't use in my small studio. I like it for the general information re the various techniques, because it is a beautiful book, and a great reference. Especially interesting to me was the info re prepping the metal for the patina process. if you are looking for info re basic kitchen sink patinas like vinegar and ammonia this is not the book for you If you want to know about coloring metals, not just with reactive patinas, but with other methods (e.g.heat, pigment,dye plating, paint, dyed liquid, clear coat, dyed paste wax and more), you will enjoy this bookI said before it is beautiful. The pictures of patinas are large as are the pictures with instructions. The colors are incredible.I am an intermediate metal smithing student and spend hours on the couch paging through books and dreaming and this is just the best!

I like this book...it's great to look through and easy to marvel at the techniques and colors. It is very comprehensive, laid out very well, organized, clear...nicely done. It is not quite as user friendly for me as I'd hoped because most of the techniques are chemical heavy and require a variety of chemicals that I don't have on hand. However, I'm happy to have it in my collection. As a metalsmith/jewelry maker, I will learn to do some of these effects at some point. Pretty sure I'll be very proud of myself when i do!

This book has wonderful pictures of the different types of patination you can get on various metals. I may not try many of them, but I do like making jewelry from a variety of metal and look forward to trying some of the patinas for myself. The book has sections of different metals to use and safety information. How to set up a studio ect. This book is a dream for metal workers and the pictures are fantastic.

I work with metal and I've been experiments and creating designs with patina, the natural patina and the ones that are not natural. This book is beyond fantastic and if I can follow it and use the different methods, it will greatly enhance my jewelry pieces. But, this is not a 'how to' learn quick type book, you should get College Credits for reading this from cover to cover. Some of this is over my head, but with time you learn more than you thought you could learn/know about the chemical reactions of metal.

Best patina book ever. I no longer have to google and hunt for formulas ... This is a patina bible with excellent photos and very clear instructions ... I never have to look anywhere else for this info! It is also a beautifully done book that will hold up well in my studio and is a hardback which is sturdy. The step by step instructions show the variety of finishes that can be produced on different metals and how modifications on the application can effect the result.. Perfect book.

This is an excellent and comprehensive book, well worth reading several times. Ill be referring to it for years to come. Especially good for anyone raising livestock, but the information is needed by anyone who eats. There is so much we can all do to sequester carbon in the soil, infiltrate rainwater, and develop great relationships with the natural world. This book is an inspiration for me.
