There must be a German word for something that fits so well you feel comfortable in it but also keeps you painfully aware of its sharp edges by pinching you at every turn.Schuman's simultaneous accounts of living in academia and living in Berlin capture the allure and alienation of both subjects, the alternating admiration and irritation. Having lived in Berlin at approximately the same time for similar reasons, I found her descriptions fit so well and rang so true that I couldn't put the book down...and they also made me squirm with remembered discomforts.Great wit...engaging voice...cringe-worthy accuracy.
I bought and read, "Schadenfreude, A Love Story: Me, the Germans and...Words for", on the basis of the blurb, which seemed to indicate that it would be about a young American woman who has made a life for herself in Germany, Berlin, to be exact. What the book is is actually a funny, rambling, coming-of-age saga, where a love of Kafka and the education in learning German, has actually prepared Rebecca Schuman for nothing other than writing creatively for the on-line Slate magazine. In general, I am not a great reader of coming-of-age memoirs, but Schuman's was worth the venture into the genre.As a woman who is probably the same age as Rebecca's parents - both college professors - and having children the same age as Rebecca, I've long been cognizant of an often lengthy forced adolescence. A disappointing job market in the past 20 years and increased chances at advanced education has given many of today's young adults advanced degrees but little opportunity to put them to use. Rebecca, who writea wittily about her life and the people she's met along the way, seems almost a casualty of this economic paradigm.If you're looking for a book about moving to Germany and reinventing yourself, don't read this book, because, frankly, you'll be disappointed. But if you're looking for a smart, snarky read by a young woman who seems quite lovable and who is making her way in the world, pick "Schadenfreude" up and enjoy it.
Dr. Rebecca Schmuan brings readers along to different chapters in her life shaped in various ways by the German language, whether it's scenes from her study abroad life in Münster or surviving silent conversations during nights out in Berlin. Her humor shines through tales of heartache we can all relate to and you're left wondering what's going to happen next all the way through to the final word in the Nachwort. I found I could especially relate as I currently live in Germany and, as Rebecca would put it, am selectively Jewish. More profoundly, I -- as I'm sure most of us have -- have struggled in various stages of my life with, well, what I'm going to make of my life. For those who've wrestled with this profound question, there's a kindred spirit in Rebecca and Schadenfreude, A Love Story.
As a retired high school French instructor, who has been "senior citizen" auditing German classes the last four years at the UOregon, Ms. Schuman's book briskly rapped all the linguistic nerves in my addled brain. I felt empathy, confusion, fear and joy (not necessarily in that order) as I read her (mis)adventure-laced student exchange memoirs! The best news of all is that Rebecca has time on her side to explore what's ahead in her professional and personal life. Recommend? Yes . . . To anyone who has ever signed up for a foreign language course with the notion it would be "an easy A" or that fluency would ensue without stepping foot abroad!
Everyone needs to go out and purchase this smart, poignant book by Slate columnist and blogger extraordinaire, Rebecca Schuman. It's the kind of funny that makes you laugh so hard you have to put the book down, and when you pick it back up you start laughing at the same sentence all over again. It's the kind of funny that makes you laugh so hard you write your first ever Amazon review. It's the kind of funny that makes you demand your book club read it next just so you can read it again. I learned a little German and a lot about Kafka (new insights on the books I had already read and new motivation to read Kafka's other works). I've probably read over a dozen in this type of memoir genre and I liked this one the most. Definitely going to be one of the best of 2017.
Let no one accuse Schuman of leading an unexamined life! The book chronicles Schuman's love-hate relationship with the German language, beginning with her being introduced to Kafka by a high school sweat heart and ending with her taking a job as a columnist at Slate, with stops along the way in college, Prague, Berlin, graduate school and a Sisyphean effort to secure a tenure-track job at a university. It's a madcap adventure, told with humor and honesty.
Speaking as a current expat in Germany, I am very interested in the perspectives of those who have undergone this particular foreign immersion experience. Ms Schuman provided that, and a whole lot more. Her book is witty, charming, and a joy to read, no matter what your foreign experience may be. If you have ever Iived in Germany, it is absolutely hilarious as well. Highly recommended.
A delightful memoir, told with blinding honesty and broad humor. Of extra interest for anyone who eithert speaks or has tried to learn German -- or for aficionados of Franz Kafka (note the caricature of Gregor Samsa as a cockroach on the dust jacket!). Also provides a needed caution for those who are attempting to make a career in academia in subject areas that are not mainstream in today's educational marketplace.
