This book has great potential. It is full of interesting information about walking. Ms. Foome took the time to write a good book, unfortunately, she did not take the time to proofread it. Everything is spelled right (spell-check can be a great thing), but sometimes the wrong word is used. (Like maybe auto correct gone wrong?)Besides all the misused words and the poorly worded sentences, there are facts that are just plain wrong. When calculating how many calories are burned in a 30 minute "brisk" walk, the author assumes the speed of 6 miles per hour. Since walking at 3 miles per hour gets me slightly out of breath and there is no way I could do 6 miles per hour for 30 minutes, I looked this one up. The CDC defines a "brisk walk" as 3 miles per hour and Wikipedia defines it as 6.5 kilometers per hour, that is 4 miles per hour. Neither of these come anywhere close to the 6 miles per hour that the author uses to calculate the number of calories burned in a 30 minute walk. No wonder that the calories burned are so high in her calculations.In a later chapter the author makes the statement: "Most of us will also probably live within walking distance from our jobs." She goes on to point out that walking distance is farther than most people think. The problem is that the average commute in America is 26 minutes by car (according to the Population Reference Bureau). There is no way that "most" people live within walking distance of work. I understand the point that Ms. Froome is trying to make, but making up facts is not the way to get it across.She does cover a lot of interesting information including what kind of backpack to get, what kind of shoes to get, what to do about common problems and a lot more. I enjoyed reading the book (but was irritated that I had to stop frequently to figure out what Ms. Froome meant (because the sentence was messed up in one way or another). I hope that she takes the time to update it because with a good editor and some revision, this could be a great book.
Walking is a very good inexpensive thing anyone can do. Even folks with walkers. Really no special cost involved. Just move. Any walk is better than no walk.
This book was just what I expected. It gave me the basics without losing me in technical jargon. By the end of the book I felt read to step outside my door and walk. I highly recommend this book!
This very short book is an excellent review of the basics. During the early 60s I did one of president John Kennedys 50 mile walks. Then I entered my working life and neglected walking. This book has inspired me, in retirement, to start walking again.
The book would benefit from having an editor. I’ve been walking for six months, but I did learn a thing or two.
Fair book. Easy to read. Mist infornnation i already knew but this did encourage me to get back to regular walking. Especially liked the section on stretches to remedy various injuries and warm up stretches.
