I dove into this book excited to find some wildly exciting stories, but then the tone grew somber as I moved through the book, and the book ended with a story that was rather sad, given the death of the author's lover and of the author himself at 45. So not quite the fun that I expected, but on the other hand quite good: the stories are deep but never heavy because they are all told with flair, there's diversity in message, and the personality of the storytellers shines through, carrying the stories along beautifully. It's certainly worth 5 stars.
Fact. I love The Moth Radio Hour. The book has some of the stories I heard on my iPhone, but I believe the choice of stories to publish was based on the authors being well-known as opposed to being the best stories. There have been times when hearing stories I have laughed so hard I cried. None of those are in the book. None of the stories I replayed for my husband because they were so good were in the book. I can’t be the only one disappointed by the choices. This doesn’t mean it’s not a good book. It just could have been ever so much better.
Stories to trim your sails. Losing sight of land, lost in your own problems? Beautiful stories about emotional growth, lighthouses to find the safe harbour of you own inner strength, let these guide you. You are not the first, you are not alone, you are not the last. Be kind.
This is a wonderful series of tales. Reminded me of my parents generation when the family (and any friends who happened to be there,) would gather on the porch and talk for hours in the half-light of a lamp in the living room. Wish we took time for those evenings now - maybe I should start a Moth!
The book itself arrived quickly and was in perfect shape - but I'm rating it three stars because the stories that are printed in the book don't seem to be the same monologue as those that I have heard played on The Moth podcast - a few of the stories in the book were repeats for me but I feel I was reading a condensed version. Not a big deal, but a disservice to the Moth-ers (Moth authors - ha!). I enjoyed the stories that were compiled and liked that they were put together based on theme.
The Moth has a long history of short story narrations. Since I am an aspiring short story writer, this publication with its long history of worthy literature is a must for my library. Each of these stories is exquisite in their brevity, style, and rhythm. Each offers an interesting use of word pictures emitting never ending surprises. I fully realize how difficult this form of literature is to produce. Catherine Burns is a master contributor to the form.
Wish I had known about Moth before. What a great testament to the lives of the storytellers. A great book to read anytime. Short stories that grab and keep your interest.
I love these stories!! Quick glimpses into the lives of very diverse people, some very successful, one prison story, one prostitute who spent time in a harem in the Middle East, but all who had a turning point in their lives.
