Excellent and detailed book. I bought this for my husband who was a beginner. This has several projects in it and they are all very nice. The instructions are clearly written and illustrated. He was able to finish his first project fairly quickly and it turned out pretty nice, it was the betta fish project which he had me paint to look like our daughters fish. I'd recommend this book to anyone starting out or looking for a good understanding of relief carving/

This is a good introduction to relief carving. I first bought the Wayne Barton book, which seems limited to three types of chip carving cuts and patterns without explanations.Lora Irish is much kinder, much more instructive, and I believe much more versatile in the work I will be able to produce. She doesn't sell name branded knives or sharpening stones, indeed, encourages economy and careful practice before investing in "stuff". The instructions are clear and alternative methods are offered for those of us who don't quite get things right the first time.Her approach to relief carving seems to open up a wider world of innovation. I don't quite understand the appeal of chip-carving-only decoration, even if it does become very intricate. I prefer to carve, rather than spend my time with complex layout and then follow-the-lines with the tool.

The book cover and write up on-line do not do this book justice. I ordered the book because my husband has done some wonderful carvings from Lora Irish's designs. They have incredible detail and depth. The designs in this book are varied and illustrated in amazing colors. The projects span all levels of expertise. My husband has carved for many years, and we are always on the look-out for new material. This book totally fits the bill. He has already selected four "must-do" projects.

This book is a good one to have on low relief wood carving, I have not done any of the projects but some of the information in it has helped me understand some of the issue of low relief carving and I have to some extent able to lean just by looking at the illustration in the book. If you are planning to do low relief carving then this IS the book to have and learn from...!

got this for my boyfriend who just started wood working. great guide for beginners. briefly covers all the basics. would recommend for anyone who is interested in learning woodwork but dose not know where to start. some of the projects are a little strange but they are still great practice and this book is a great resource.

This book is what I use to learn relief woodcarving. It covers tools, techniques, different types of wood and includes detailed projects. The projects are broken into steps that show the different levels in the wood for each layer. I really recommend it for anyone planning to learn this fun and productive hobby.

DiZarie was doing too much. Her attitude throughout both novels was over the top. Even though I wanted her and Kalen to get together, it was hard to cheer for her. Overall, I loved the story line, however, there were several examples of poor editing throughout the book.

I'm glad Kalen finally seen kalyla for the jealous spoiled brat she really is trying to destroy his happiness with DiZarie. I'm happy Zobie finally found someone to make him happy.

Two was a little better with the drama! However it was annoying that Lyla kept making it! I was hoping Kaire got her back! Nice ending besides Lyla being bakyin the picture.

I enjoyed the storyline, once it took off. Again the read read more like a teenage love story. A little slow for my liking but worth your time to read.

Glad Storm was all well. Still hate Kayla the BFF, and I’m glad they chose to not entertain her. Good love story

Sorry if I spoil anything in the book, but this I feel is a must read if you read true crime . I was 12 yrs old living in this central CA area when Steven was kidnapped. I do remember our parents giving us the talk then never to get in cars of strangers and not even with a friend that was prearranged. Steven Stayner was Timmy Whites hero and many more children too, as he still wanted a girl/daughter in his family too. So Steven was a hero to many that he didn't even know.This book is a very good read, and parts might have been embellished but I didn't think it took away what horrible things Steven went through, and he knew he didn't want Timmy to go through the same pain and humiliation. So he did the right thing to escape and get them out of there, no matter how many times they had to try. At least they made it.The only thing I couldn't figure out was, why Steven was going to get Timmy help but then his plan was to go back to the cabin before the monster he called dad got home. Why would he at that point not want to save himself too. He knew there would be punishment when he got back. He didn't know if he went back that the monster had already dug his grave. Thank goodness he stayed with Timmy. So Timmy also saved Steven's life as well.Sad true story but a good read FIVE STARS FOR THIS ONE So sad that he only had 9 yrs of freedom before he died in the car accident. I do feel for his wife and two even though they were separated, but still close with his children.Thank you to the author of this book. I do hope the profits for this book are being put in the bank for these kids Steven was not lucky enough to see grow up.. Perfect title for this book! A young child is abducted, told his parents gave him away and forced to call his abductor "Dad". He suffers abuse and molestation (which is never graphically described--no need, you get the picture) and forced to use another name. Years later, when Steven is getting too old for his abductor, another boy is taken and kept drugged. Steven walks miles, sometimes carrying the young child, to find safety for the child before he is doomed to the same fate as Steven. He knows his own life will be in danger, but he helps this young stranger anyway. He is a real hero!The story is well told and you get a real feel for all the characters. Unfortunately the hero was raised to smoke, drink and drug and had some difficulty adjusting to a normal family life. This part of the story could have been dealt with more fully, but perhaps that is another book!I would recommend this book even though it is a heartbreaking story of abduction. That Steven would risk his life to save another's even after his amoral upbringing is truly remarkable and uplifting.

Overall, I enjoyed this read. The story of Steven is compelling, sad at times, inspiring in others. The author does a good job of blending source material and creativity to convey what it must have been like for Steven to grow up with the pedophile who kidnapped him. There are also a lot of resources in this book for helping kids stay safe, and dealing with the predators who would try to hurt them. For these reasons, I think the book is worth supporting.For the most part, the book itself is well written, although there are some errors in grammar and other things that could have been fixed by a professional proofreader. It's not enough for me to give the book a bad review, but it does keep the book from getting five stars. If you can overlook grammar errors (and a lot of people can), then the book is worth reading.

I remember seeing Steven and the actor who portrayed him in the movie on a talk show. And then I was hearing Steven was gone. The story broke my heart then and it hurts again now. Such a tragedy. I can only hope that when Steven drew his last breath, that he did so knowing that he had made such a huge impact on so many lives and that he was so very loved.

I had watched the movie about this young man and what he had endured many years ago and wondered how much had been added, or more importantly, how much had been excluded to enhance the "movie for television."This book reveals the true circumstances, events and issues that Stevie and his family endured from the beginning of their ordeal to the end. It doesn't focus on the actual and specific pedophile acts that were inflicted upon him, which aren't necessary to learn and understand what he and his family suffered from for so many years.This books also includes, at the end, several resources to educate your children or children in your life (grandchildren, nieces, nephews, etc) on how to avoid being in a position that could result in an abduction or other harmful situation.

All my life I have heard and seen Steven's story. It hit very close to home because Steven and I were the same age, and I grew up in California. I remember the sudden warnings and scares of Stranger Danger. I like this book because it shows Steven not only as a victim, but more so a hero and a strong, caring person, who lived a very tragic life. I have sorrow for what he endured, but also a strong respect of the person who made the most of his life instead of dwelling on his past. I appreciate the author showing me a different side of the story.

I remember the story of Steven some years back, I watch the television movie of his horror. It seemed as though it was forced mainly on Steven being molested, and how mixed up he became. This book covers the pain that Steven felt, and how he tried to get his life back. But the main thing that the,author seem to want readers to know about is that Steven did not want another child to go though what he did. From his rescue of Timmy White, to the talks he gave to school kids, Steven saved many a kids lives.

My husband was in the Navy and he just loved the book. As a result he bought our 2 grandsons each a book. Our one grandson is at Anapolis the other one is just graduating from High School and has already signed up for the Navy. He leaves for Great Lakes in August.

I got this for my father as a Christmas gift and he loves it. He is a Navy vet and he loves reading over the history of the military branch. I've not had much of a chance to look through it myself since the holiday but he has had noting but good things to say about it. Also, this might not be a surprise for everyone but the cover is soft, almost like a pseudo-leather piece of furniture. Just something to keep in mind if you are opening the package with something sharp.

Great book for naval history! I am extremely glad I bought this book. I am studying for the ASTB. This book has a lot of great knowledge.

This is a great gift for sailors. We put it on a stand on top of a bookcase, and it's a good conversation starter. There are many excellent and accurate pictures, and the passages are neat. Not something to read cover to cover, exactly, but a good book nonetheless.

I have only had the book a very short time, so I can not thoroughly review the entire text. However I can say that this book should not be looked at as a reference, per se, as it will not be useful ordinarily as a something to grab off the shelf in an emergency, critical care setting. In my opinion, It is better suited as a teaching textbook, reviewing and explaining the physiology and pathophysiology of many critical care situations as well as the rational for why/how to approach, treat and monitor each situation ...all in considerable depth. I can say from what I've already read that there is quite a bit of great, detailed information regarding fluid therapy, (why use one or the other, the different colloidal fluids options..why choose which colloid and when) blood gases, shock, SIRS, MODS ...these are the chapters I have read and they are excellent. There is a plethora of useful tables with drugs, drug doses, equipment, and there are many explanatory, colorful figures throughout.As I said I can not thoroughly review the entire book...the book is very big (more than 900 over-sized pages) and quite heavy, poundage-wise. It is printed on high-quality glossy paper...and I've only gotten through a couple of the chapters in several weeks. I think to get the most from a book like this, it is best to read it thoroughly and carefully, one chapter at a time. It may take quite awhile but I think it'll be worth it. Personally, I don't like buying books then filing them decoratively on a shelf with the hope that some day I can find something I need in there...somewhere. I recommend that if you buy the book, you actually read it.I am not an emergency/ critical care veterinarian specialist, just a general practitioner, so this book is for me a highly educational in-depth window into this very fascinating, challenging and likely quite rewarding ( hopefully most of the time) specialty.

Great reference book as a baby vet in ER practice!!

As a pure emergency book for day-in and night-out doctors - this book does not work and will not provide the readily accessible information found in other ER books.For the doctor who wants to follow advance training in emergency and critical care, this book provides brief summaries of current topics in emergency and critical care. However the book fails to cover topics in the depth needed or expected of advance trainees. These doctors will be better served looking a current medical journals for that level of information.Index is not complete and there are multiple items expected to be indexed in this type of book that are not found. Good effort but not the single source of ER or critical care information you need or want.

Good book when it comes to studying. No a very good reference when you need something quick.

Excellent book. Recommended for emergency medicine especially the sections on emergency procedures with pictures and explanations and sections on commonly seen endocrine and metabolic disasters.

Excellent book for emergency.

Excellent source of information even if you are not a vet. Ideal for pet owners who want to stay on top of what is happening to their companion animals.

Haven't read the whole thing yet, but so far very happy with the updates in the new addition. Many more chapters added and information is well organized.
