TAYLOR BROWN grew up on the Georgia coast. He has lived in Buenos Aires, San Francisco, and the mountains of Western North Carolina. His fiction has appeared in more than twenty publications, he is the recipient of the Montana Prize in Fiction, and he has been a finalist in both the Machigonne Fiction Contest and the Doris Betts Fiction Prize. I hope I'm invited to a cocktail party in the near future, and while I am standing around sipping my drink, I will turn to the person next to me and say, "Did you know there is this river in Georgia where the sturgeon jump out of the water and kill you?" Because then I'll feel like I got something of value from reading this book.It is well-written and well-researched, and for the right reader (probably an outdoorsy man), reading about a river is probably of interest. I didn't care about the flora and fauna, life on the river, the killer fish, etc. The only reason I finished it was because it was our book club book.When the book was described to us, I heard "history" and "mystery" but it was not the sort I found interesting. I suspect the fact there were essentially no women in the book at all didn't help. If you love good writing, and reading about men in a natural setting, this is the book for you. Otherwise, look elsewhere for your history and mystery.

Born on the Georgia coast, Taylor Brown offers us a richly creative novel in A River of Kings. Three stories unfold. One follows the journey of brothers- Hunter and Lawton Loggins- as they kayak Georgia’s great Altamaha River. They are carrying the ashes of their father to scatter at river’s end.Another, seen through cracks in time, chronicles the ill-fated effort of the French to establish Fort Caroline at the mouth of the Altamaha in the 16th century near modern-day Darien. We learn of the horrors the French suffered from the record kept by artist Jacques Le Moyne de Morgue. His drawings also preserve the often grotesque world around him, filled with water monsters and merciless enemies. Many of these drawings are included in Brown’s novel, and they inspire fear.A third tale chronicles the decline and fall of a strong and passionate man, Hunter and Lawson’s father, Hiram Loggins. A river-born shrimper, he never recovers emotionally or financially after a hurricane destroys his boat. A Viet Nam vet, he is hell on his growing boys. “Badged” with tattoos. Drinks too much. Despises those who defile the river. Couples with a beautiful but unattainable swamp denizen. Dies under mysterious circumstances.In the struggles and affections that hang between the two brothers, there is emotional power. Lawton is a Navy seal, physically hardened and hair-triggered for danger. Hunter is less adventurous and more introspective, anxious to understand how their father’s hard nature shaped their coming of age. The river is the testing ground for manhood and they are in it up to their chins. Miscreants and saints abide in the wilderness, keeping us off balance as we try to keep up.Georgia’s Altamaha River carries more water into the Atlantic than any single US river, so the arena through which these three plots careen is enormous. Primeval stands of giant cypress trees, grimy backwater fish camps, week-enders hell bent on fast boats and big fish, and the ever raging battle between law enforcement officials and marijuana traffickers give us a riveting ride. Things turn deadly when the kayakers find clues to their father’s death and must battle with Russian bad-guys. Intermittently, we are voyeurs watching the father’s couplings with swamp lady, witnesses to endless bickering and taunting between the brothers and helpless bystanders as the starving French huddle in their fort to await the arrival of their savage Catholic enemies from St. Augustine.Sound confusing? Not so. Carefully compartmentalized, the yarns all move toward a satisfying conclusion. It is for others to say this is literature, but be prepared to be challenged. This is a psychological thriller as well as beautifully rendered history. Saccharine words are in short supply as the river roils the stories together. Tired of beach reads and formula thrillers? A River of Kings is the cure.

I really enjoyed the book, as I have all of Taylor Browns Books! Well written, Taylor had a gift of expressing how southern men think and act yet shows their weaknesses and emotions very eloquently.

Read the book with my bookclub, and we had a good discussion. Some didn't really enjoy the historical storyline but liked the contemporary one---there are two storylines in the book. I enjoyed both.

Excellent read, and tons of suspense. Cool structure with story told from three different perspectives. Very highly recommended, for those who do not have any trouble thinking for days about what they have just read.

I only read the first few pages but I didn’t care for the writer’s style of writing so I didn’t continue. The author was not at all succinct in his writing.

I rarely just pick up a book based on reviews, but this lived up to the accolades. As a kayaker, Southerner, and a fan of this genre I am glad I read it.

It's been a whole since I read this book but I liked it enough to read 2 more of his books. I liked the language and pace of novel.

I own Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (Jul 15, 2009)by American Psychological Association, APA: The Easy Way! [Updated for APA 6th Edition (Sep 28, 2009) Abridgedby Peggy M. Houghton and Timothy J. Houghton, and Apa Guidelines (Quick Study Academic) (May 31, 2015)by Inc. BarCharts, but this pocket style manual is indispensable. Since I have to write a lot of papers, it is seemed important to own the APA manual itself because you cannot go wrong with possessing the original master piece. The pocket manual is much more user- friendly though, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has to write APA documents of any type. It is my favorite writing tool so far.

I found this manual to be very straightforward, easy to use, and extremely helpful. I primarily used MLA style in undergrad, but for my program in grad school everything is in APA. This has a detailed index that helps you cross reference what you need to know and where to find it. It also has the formatting broken down into different types of papers (research, essays, etc.) I would totally recommend this to anyone who needs a solid, easy to access reference for APA.

Great little reference book. It's easy to use, and the compact size is perfect for a cluttered desktop. The only reason I rated 4 instead of 5 is the price. I find it a bit pricey considering I was purchasing several copies for my AP Lit class. Not to mention, new versions appear fairly often with each new edition of MLA, APA, etc. I was unable to purchase enough copies for my relatively small class because of the price.

Don't have style? This book can teach you how to be the most stylist person in your English class. No, not advice on haircuts or bellbottoms, but definitely a go-to when you need to write a convincing argumentative paper for your prof. He is the one who can probably use style points. Here it is ....use dashes, not a line of dots.....

I have used this handy pocket guide for a few years now while working towards my degree and it is very helpful. Sometimes the layout isn't the best to navigate and I can Google to search for an answer faster, but I would still recommend it to anyone that has to use APA format.

My English professor recommended the 6th edition of "A Pocket Style Manual" so I decided to buy it and I'm so glad I did! I'm an English major and I plan on going all the way with my education (my goal is a PhD in English and to have a career as an English teacher) and this manual will be an immense help and will be with me all the way. It has almost everything you'll need for writing papers (I say "almost" because a section on Outlines, Note Cards, and Working Bibliography Cards would fit in to this manual very well; but even without the aforementioned sections it's still a wonderful manual).I highly recommend this manual, especially if you're an English major.

Every student--middle school, high school, college, grad school--who has to write papers can benefit from this style manual. It could not be easier to use. Regardless of required format (Chicago, APA, MLA, etc.) or source materials (Internet, personal interviews, e-mail, DVDs, etc.), the writer is given specific examples of how to document everything, along with examples of a finished paper in each style. I give copies of it as graduation gifts and recommend it to students, parents, and other teachers.A writer, editor, tutor, and former English teacher, I have a bookcase full of reference books. This is the one I take with me wherever I go.

I hung this is in my bedroom. The fairy gardens are charming and creative. I almost wish I'd gotten the full size version of this one. But the mini calendar fits the space better.

This is my go-to book when I need to understand a difficult Clojure concept deeply and thoroughly, or when I need to understand some obscure feature of the language. There's information here that's either difficult to find on the web, or difficult to understand when you do find it. No book is perfect, but this one has rarely if ever disappointed me. I know no other Clojure book like it. (For example, _The Joy of Clojure_ is a good book, but what it covers is sometimes idiosyncratic and it's not always thorough.) I haven't read _Clojure Programming_ cover to cover, and I've only glanced at the early chapters because I'd already been using Clojure for a while. However, I think it's probably a good introductory book, at least for someone with programming experience in another language, because the introductory parts of later chapters are very clear and easy. The writing style is professional, and warm but matter of fact rather than cute or overly "friendly". This seems like a good candidate for "If you had to buy only one Clojure book, get this one" status. (Note though that the book was published in 2012. Though most of the language was established by then, there are some features such as tranducers that are more recent.)I have the Kindle edition, and though I think a printed copy would be a little bit easier to use, this is one of the best technical ebooks I've used. Source code resizes just the way you'd want when you change the font size. I imagine that other O'Reilly ebooks work the same way.

I am really not sure who this is written for. It is not built as a teaching book for a new comer to the language and not organized as a reference book for someone who is already working with the language, perhaps best suited for someone who knows Clojure fairly well but needs more depth. It is very tough to follow if you don't know the language or functional programming already. In particular, code examples early in the book use constructs and notations that are addressed only later . For example, the section on macros should come much earlier because macros are used extensively in examples in earlier chapters.

I've read several clojure books, and this one is good. However, I would not make this your introduction to clojure. The book is more up to date from what I can tell (some of the others are getting long in the tooth, since clojure is at 1.4.x now). There are several great things in this book that should really help hone a person's skills in this language.The introductory chapters seem to hurry things long so they can get to the "good stuff." Unfortunately, that will leave people who are new to the language behind. So, think of this as a good second book. Perhaps "Programming Clojure, 2nd Edition" by Halloway and Bedra should be a begginer's first book, followed by this one to take the knowledge deeper. This means that if by chapter 4 you're not really "up to speed" on clojure, the rest of the book will not make much sense to you.Another word of advice to people new to functional programming in general. A language is just the embodiment of programming concepts. If you are coming from a OO background and you are used to the imperative family of languages ie C, C++, Java, C#, etc, then do not assume because you have mastered them that FP will flow easily. There are several concepts in FP that don't map -- they are concepts you have not yet seen. If you do not learn the concepts, the syntax in the language supporting those things won't make sense. When you read people saying "think in clojure" they are meaning to think more in terms of FP and how you'd solve problems in that sense, as opposed to say an OO sense. The problem with most books on functional languages is that they don't spend enough effort teaching the concepts but rather do a quick treatment of the concept and go right to syntax. This approach makes it a bit harder for people to grasp FP.This book tries to come back to thinking in FP -- but way too far into it for beginners. This should have been done more up front, rather than deep in the book. But, if you're not a beginner, then I definitely recommend this book.

This book describes the language in a "depth-first" approach and I found it too difficult to read and follow. Despite I'm a professional developer who already knows Erlang (one of the most popular functional programming language) and has been programming for about 30 years, I found the first few chapters of the very challenging.When the book describes a language construct, it seems like the author tries to present all the features *at once* - no matter it is a basic feature or an advanced feature. Furthermore, the examples in the book contain too many "future references", which point to later chapters. For example, material presented in Chapter 2 contains tons of references to Chapter 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 5, etc. The code examples unnecessarily use language constructs and functions which are not yet mentioned. This forces the readers to give up completely understanding the code examples at the moment, and go back after they read a later chapter.In my opinion, if the book is arranged in a "spiral", "incremental" sense, I will give it a 5-star rating.

I have purchased every Clojure book that has been published so far. While they all overlap in their coverage of core functionality, each book has something the others lack. Clojure Programming is the most comprehensive by far. Not only does it provide some of the clearest explanations of advanced features that typically mystify newcomers (e.g. hygienic macros), but it also covers practical topics such as web frameworks and database libraries. I would recommend this book without hesitation to all aspiring Clojure programmers.

In the opening scene of the classic HBO series "The Wire" a Baltimore homicide detective interviews the witness to a seemingly senseless murder of a teenager in the street and wants to know why the victim's street name was "Snot Boogie" and why he was shot. Reading "The Wire" producer David Simon's journal of a year spent with the Baltimore homicide department when he was a crime reporter for the Baltimore Sun, I was certain that scene was so real it had to be in the book somewhere. And it was, toward the end.Simon was attuned to life on the gritty, city streets of Baltimore with an ear for the argot unlike any other producer of a TV crime show or crime writer. It showed in the TV series "Homicide: Life on the Streets," "The Corner," and lastly his masterpiece, "The Wire," and it shows in this pull-no-punches book. The senseless killings, the frustration of the detectives when confronted with a stone-cold "who-dun-it" they knew would never get solved, the anger when obviously guilty people they had arrested went free after trial ... it's all here, and more. As I read this book, I could see the models for the characters who appeared in the TV shows (I didn't even need to see the photos of the actors playing these models to figure out who they were) being developed. It isn't easy to make non-fiction a gripping read, but David Simon makes it look easy.

I'm perpetually trying to get back into reading, and for some reason, I settled on this book to do it sometime last year. Maybe it's because I'm a criminal defense lawyer and I wanted to see how the other side lives. Who knows.After I started, I could barely put this book down. I have no idea how Simon managed to get as much access to the police department as he did, but it was an extraordinarily revealing look at how homicide detectives operate. Not just the investigation of cases, either (although that is fascinating in and of itself). The politics of a big-city cop shop - the chain of command, the objectives, the cases which are deemed important versus those that are not.It's not going to be for anyone. There's graphic stuff here. The book takes you to some very grim places. After all, it's a book about murder police. But if police interest you, if homicide interests you, or if you just want to see what life would be like as a detective, read this. You won't regret it.(And I defy you to read this and then not start watching The Wire, one of Simon's television series having to do with crime in Baltimore.)

As a huge fan of The Wire (I've watched the series through at least 5 times), I can't believe I only read this just now. This book is probably my favorite narrative nonfiction book of all time now, along with Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. It is written much like a novel, with engaging stories and characters throughout.The best part is that, like real life, not all of the storylines get neatly tied off in a bow. Just like life, politics dictates that resources are shifted from one case that has gone cold to the next hot case.The bits about interrogation are also amazing, tackling interview techniques used by cops, discussion around Miranda warnings and the 5th Amendment, and how cops have to ork around these limitations.Really awesome stuff. If you have ever been interested in Law & Order, The Wire, Radley Balko, or issues of police brutality or effectiveness, or if you have ever lived in an American city, or in America, I consider this a must-read. Do it!

To say that David Simon's book HOMICIDE: A YEAR ON THE KILLING STREETS is iconic would be a bit of an understatement. It is the recipient of the 1992 Edgar Award (an award created by the Mystery Writers of America) and has spawned not one but TWO television shows: HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREETS and THE WIRE, both of which are critically acclaimed and the latter which is a favorite of many noteworthy people, including President Barack Obama. But what is it about the book that endears it to true crime fans and that makes it a prime candidate for television shows?I'd only heard of HOMICIDE and THE WIRE in passing, and only after I was halfway through the book did I start to watch the former. I picked up HOMICIDE because it came highly recommended as research material for how criminal investigations work and how police officers act, think, and feel. I bought the book when I was in Baghdad back in 2008, and it's been sitting on my shelf since then. Only when I decided it was time to pursue my goal of writing a cop thriller did I finally dust it off the shelf and crack it open.My only regret is that I didn't pick it up sooner.HOMICIDE is full of dark humor, moments of redemption, and gut-wrenching instances that make you simultaneously question your faith in humanity and give thanks that such men stand ready to bring the perpetrators to justice. For me, three detectives stood out: Donald Worden, the veteran of the squad who would haze the younger detectives and often ask for a quarter (when this is explained at the end of the book, it's a real, "Oh! NOW I get it!" moment); Tom Pellegrini, the new guy fresh from the mayor's protection detail, who's slammed with a real whodunit out the gate, and a heinous one at that: the rape and murder of young Latonya Wallace; and Harry Edgerton, a rare black detective that hails from New York, operates as a lone wolf, and despite his many enemies on the force, undeniably produces results. There were often times where I forgot I was reading a work of nonfiction, as the characters enraptured me better than many fictional works I had read.Simon's prose is top notch. It's tight, gritty, and spurs the reader forward. Most importantly, it's unadulterated: the detectives themselves requested very few changes, and the Baltimore Police Department's review yielded no changes. The best feature of the prose is that it's real. You can tell that while it may enthrall like the best thriller, this is real life. These are crimes that actually occurred to people, and these are the men who deal with death on a regular basis, dispassionately facing death and working in it to find the truth.Hands down, HOMICIDE is a must-read for any fan of the true crime genre, or for those looking to see how real detective work is done. And as the closing remarks from Terry McLarney state, not much has changed since that year on the killing streets.
