Peter Hook's writing style might not be for everyone, but for brutally honest, self-deprecating, charming (if routinely vulgar) British wit, this is a treasure trove of entertaining reading. Reading this book feels like one of your best mates recounting a story from an epic weekend escapade - only this takes place over years and years. I only knew of the Hacienda based on media accounts; now I feel like I was there. Great book.

Much preferred Hook's other book. This one ... focuses on the defunct club that New Order co-owned. Despite some really cool stories here and there... it didn't grab me like his other book on Joy Division. Hook is a good writer... but this one got a bit tedious. Printing the budgets, and the lists of every appearance... I didn't think it was necessary in the body of the book. Maybe as an appendix... but I didn't enjoy that part of it. Honestly... I haven't finished it yet... don't know if I will. I'm like 75% there, and I've gotten the point. If I do revisit the book (I bought the electronic version on my Kindle), then I'll come back and update this review. Essential buying if you're a fan of NEW ORDER or a HOOK completist... for some background info you get. Wish there had been MORE photos of the club.

One of my my favorite recent music related books. In some sense it reads like a dark comedy. The nutty incidents cant be real but they are. Id say Hook is a great story teller and Im looking forward to reading about Joy Division and New Order. I started with this book because it was my least known subject of the three. Cheers.

this is a great book, but I got to be honest, there are a lot of details which are only for hardcore fans of that era. I love all the details that Peter got into to explain and talk about many things. This is nice reading aside a detailed review of facts, people , attitudes and fashion.The Hacienda plays an important piece of the action of the 80's and 90's Manchester, if you love and want to learn more of this, this is the book.There are a lot of statistics, if you are into that.

Growing up a Peter Hook and New Order fan I fantasized about visiting the Hacienda in my youth. I never did visit the Hacienda but I think I might have to visit Hacienda 251 instead. Either way, Peter Hook has a knack for being an amazing storyteller and I am so glad I finally tracked this book down. I read it from cover to cover in less than a week. If you want to know about Manchester in the 1980's, Acid House and what it was like to be an owner in a world renowned club, then make sure you read this. The gentlemen from The Chemical Brothers even get a nod in these pages. I'm just glad Hooky was able to live through all those faux pas and debaucherous leanings to give us more great music post Hacienda 1.0.Rock on, Hooky!

I loved Peter Hooks' other book (Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division) but this book I found only so-so. Too much filler (schedules, meeting minutes, etc.). Moreover, I found it distressing to constantly read of the mismanagement and financial losses. Same story, different nights. Might mean much more to those who went there.

The book arrived in excellent conditiond and certainly the content is very interesting for Joy Division and "Madchester" fans

Do you want to motivate learners on the catholic Faith? Have family-fun nights with depth and spiritual meaning? Purchase this book and let the fun and learning begin! My students helped make the games for our classes and my own children made a few for our home, it was great fun. This is great for so many occassions and not just for kids!

It is so difficult to help a child understand their faith but through games and activities that understanding unveils itself. This book is one of the most exciting books I have come across yet.

This was a ok resource but it wasn't quite what I was looking for. It is very time consuming to make everything I needed to play the games in the book.

There are three volumes in the Ready-To-Go Game Show series - Essential Catholic Beliefs, Bible, and Catholic Teachings and Practices. Each volumes is spiral-bound and is 125 to 200+ pages long. The games are geared toward the teen crowd, but they provide enough games and material that you can play them with children a little younger, like 8 to 9 years old. Each book is divided into the specific game show with multiple options for each one. Some examples of the game shows are as follows:1. Who Wants to be a Catholic Millionaire2. Faithful Feud (Family Feud)3. Catholic Jeopardy4. Holy, Holy, Holy Squares (Hollywood Squares)5. The Church is Right (The Price is Right)6. The Real Fortune (Wheel of Fortune)7. Catholic Pictionary8. 10,000 Shekel Pyramid ($10,000 Pyramid)9. Holy Pursuit (Trivial Pursuit)I was intrigued with how you could play The Price is Right with the Catholic Church, so I immediately went to this section. Apparently, you ask the children number related questions, like "How many books are in the Bible?" or "What year did Christianity become a universal religion?" I'm sure you can also think of some others on your own. The child who gets closest to the answer then moves on to the next round where they are given 60 seconds to put the parts of the Mass in order or Feast Days and Holy Days of Obligation in order. There is no final round, but there are enough questions in the first two rounds that it should give every child a chance to participate, even if you have to have students team up.The books are a little pricey at about $22 each, but when you think about the amount of games in each book and the permissions granted to reproduce the pages in these books, they easily pay for themselves after one year's use...if not sooner. It does take a bit of effort to prepare to play each of these games, but the amount of money required to play these games is zero to very minimal depending on how nicely you want the games to look. I highly recommend these books and think that they should be in every religious education program. Be sure to check out other titles from the Ready-To-Go series that include skits, because not every kid is going to love game shows.

I checked The Fat Man From La Paz out from the library before my trip to Bolivia and am so glad that I did. I found very few books available about Bolivia and this is the only book I found of Bolivian fiction. Fortunately, it is excellent.The book contains twenty short stories written by Bolivian writers addressing themes including racial politics, romance, and Bolivian history. While some of the stories are better than others - I liked the first story the best, and the title story, The Fat Man from La Paz the least - they each have a distinct voice, and are original and enjoyable reads. The book also contains a excellent forward that gives a little bit of background on each story, great for readers interested in the cultural/political themes important to these writers of 20th century Bolivia.In short: The Fat Man From La Paz is a great read if you like short stories or Latin American fiction, and even better if you want to learn about Bolivian culture. Read this if you're planning to visit Bolivia: these stories have much more heart than a boring travel guide.

This is one of the best collections of short stories i've ever read. It contains all kinds of stories. Funny, sad, historical, etc. One thing applies to them all. They are all very good. I've been to Bolivia, talked to a lot of people there, but nobody told me about their terrific writers. Strange! Buy this book. Especialy if you like South American litrature. Really love this book. Gave it to my granddaughter for Christmas. She hasn't had time to use it yet but I'm hoping she and her Mom will soon have a girl's spa day. Really like that it has techniques for calming, like easy yoga poses.

This is a fun book for tween girls. It provides natural recipes for caring for skin, hair, and nails. Several of the recipes contain ingredients that you might not have on hand, but there are plenty that use regular pantry staples. Along with the recipes are self care tips for caring for the tweens’ skin, hair, and nails that encourage the formation of healthy habits that can last a lifetime. The book style is fun and bright to appeal to tweens. The tween girls that I know seem to be very interested beauty tips and spa time so I think this would be a hit with this age group. In fact, I think this book would a great birthday gift for a tween girl when given with supplies to make some of the recipes.I received an advance reading copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Aesthetically, this work is quite pleasing.While the intended scope of this book wasn't fine art criticism and appreciation, it wouldn't have hurt to have included some of each. The photos of puppetory productions used point conclusively to an author who has likely mastered these loftier concepts. To close the circle, some commentary about why certain productions have excelled would have been welcomed, as opposed to discussing only technical pitfalls. Unlike presentational theater, puppetry is far more technical in nature, but it is a fine art medium also and more of its practitioners should have the initiative to promote it as such.One of the best primers currently available, but it begs for a new edition.
