What can we say? It's Outlander. The TV series is very true to the book, so far, so if you've watched the show, you won't get a lot more information, but it's still a great read.

Several people in my life have recommended the Outlander series to me for years, so despite my not ever feeling a strong pull toward the premise, I finally caved and tried to give it a shot, with the first book. Long story short: I quit at 49%. I'm not really sure what I was expecting of this book except to find it to be a very good read, according to so very many. I was definitely *not* expecting a glorified bodice ripper. I mean, I knew there was going to be "romance" due to the main thrust of the plot being how Claire navigates two great loves in two different times, but I thought there was going to be more to it. (And maybe there is, later on? But I doubt it.) Took me awhile to admit that the "story" is really just various pretexts for putting Claire and her Scottish husband Jamie into a variety of steamy sex scenes. Now, don't get me wrong: I like a good steamy romance novel, now and again. It's just that I was expecting more substance from this particular series. I love sci-fi, and time travel qualifies, but turns out that's just a cute backdrop for the romance, at least in the first half of the first book. No way am I remotely inclined to slog through 8 books to see if it breaks free of the Harlequin vibe! The writing is not bad, so I'm giving it three stars. I'm not quite as outraged by the what others are calling misogyny and domestic abuse; I believe Jaime loves Claire and is trying to be a proper, loving husband, but the corrective spanking/beating he doles out is infantilizing, at best. Claire is a fighter and puts some hurt back on him, but the whole situation is designed to do what I mentioned at the beginning: to set up a steamy sex scene. In this case, a sex scene with strong B&D overtones that I don't find appealing at all.So yeah, that was about halfway through and is the point at which I remembered that life is too short to waste good reading time on anything I'm not thoroughly into. Especially with the prospect of seven more books to go. Ugh. No. Time to find something else.

I feel unworthy to even review this book, since it has been reviewed by 34,000+ people already – Written by #1 New York Times bestseller Author, Diana Gabaldon and it’s a Starz original TV Series as well. Just wow! When I first started to read this book, I hadn’t seen the TV series yet and I decided not to read the blurb. I just jumped right into the book to discover what it was about. I’ve seen countless references to Outlander on the pages that I follow on instagram and Facebook and just had to find out more. After WWII, former war nurse Claire and her husband, Frank go to Scotland on their 2nd honeymoon. In Scotland, Frank is learning about his genealogy and traced one of his ancestors as Captain Jack Randall of the English Red Dragoons, from the 18th Century. As they continue their trip, they decide to visit the Stonehenge and witness a beautiful pagan ritual. Claire goes back to the same location to take a look at flowers she found in the vicinity, but when something about these standing stones captures her attention, she touches it and ends up getting transported into the 18th Century. Once she arrives, she meets her husbands ancestor and he’s nothing like the man she knows her husband to be. After being rescued from his clutches by a Scottish clan, she is held as a guest of the Clan Mackenzie, where they try to discover what this “Sassenach’s” purpose truly is. Claire desperately tries to keep suspicions off of her back until she can devise a plan to get back to the Stonehenge, back to Frank and more importantly back to the 20th Century. Throughout her journey, she uses her nursing background and botany knowledge to heal and help the people of the clan. Enter, Jamie Fraser, the nephew to the laird of Clan Mackenzie, he is currently an outlaw and has been seeking refuge from the English. Claire and James share many adventures together and there is a clear attraction. Claire is conflicted because she does not belong to this time period no matter how she seems to be acclimating; is there anyone that she can trust to believe that she is a time traveler from the future? Will she ever make it back to the 20th Century?I decided to read each book and then the respective season of the tv show. I feel like I’ve entered the 18th Century right along with Claire and I absolutely love it!“As though, knowing that everything is possible, suddenly nothing is necessary.” Diana Gabaldon takes you on an adventure with each turn of the page; it’s beautiful, heart-breaking, you’re able to connect with the characters and you feel their pain.I’ll admit the writing was a bit difficult to get adjusted to and I used the dictionary more times than I care to admit, but once I got the hang of it, I just couldn’t put it down this 600+ page book! I look forward to reading the 2nd book! For now, I’m going to binge watch season 1!! Happy reading! 🙂check out my review at loveatfirstreadcom.wordpress.com

A few hundred pages in, I finally got into the story, only to quickly find that I could not finish reading the book. The scene where Jamie beats Claire within an inch of her life could have been used as a turning point for the characters, but instead was a quick moment that was quickly forgotten/forgiven by Claire. Practically just after he has forcibly held her down and whipped her, she is having sex with him. She also finds this to be the perfect time to tell him she loves him? I would not recommend that anyone read this book as it portrays the wrong impression to females. This book promotes domestic violence and abusive mentality. To let Claire believe she deserved the physical punishment (regardless of the time period) sends the wrong message to young girls or women suffering from abuse. The author clearly did not think about the views her writing would portray in relation to social issues. If I could give this 0 stars I would.

Hated this book. I saw a few episodes of the TV series and it seemed OK, so I thought I would try the book series. I won't be reading any more of her books. She seems to have a creepy obsession with rape and sexual violence. There are WAY too many sex scenes, so many that it got tiresome. These scenes are very graphic, as are the descriptions of rape.***SPOILERS****I had to draw the line, though, at the "hero" beating the heroine because she "deserves it", then telling her after that he enjoyed beating her, and she is basically ok with that and falls in love with him. No, this not OK, nor is it at all romantic. It's sick. I was disgusted and disappointed by this book. It also seems homophobic because the only gay characters are creepy rapists. This book belongs in the trash.

I have no idea why I started reading this book, but I've got no regrets!I'd never heard of the movie before, but I found a copy online and started watching it. As soon as I heard the first awkward line ("Hey babe, I have something for yyuuuu!"), I had to pause the movie because I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes.I then went and got all of my coworkers and we dicked off work for 3 hours watching, pausing, rewinding, and rewatching it.So this book inspired me to watch the movie which inspired a thousand jokes, and now my wall at work is covered with Johnny memes. I've since recommended the book to 3 or 4 friends who have also downloaded and read it, and I would recommend it to you as well.

Greg Sestero has done something fantastic. He's managed to perfectly pinpoint all of Tommy Wiseau's eccentricities and show us exactly why we should care about him. Our dear Sestosterone is not only talented at growing beards and playing football, he's also a great and engaging writer. As a longtime fan of The Room, I really enjoyed the way Greg switched between talking about his early years with Tommy and the actual drama happening on the set of The Room. Each anecdote is better than the last.I think as fans we sometimes forget that these characters we see onscreen (and yell insults to on countless midnight screenings) are portrayed by actual human beings, separate from their characters. I loved reading about how Juliette Daniels ended up playing Lisa and Dan Janjigian's preparation for the Oscar-worthy role of Chris-R. The Disaster Artist has brought an entirely new dimension to The Room. The book's biggest feat was helping the reader understand Tommy Wiseau, as much as anyone can understand Tommy Wiseau. Some of the details that Greg shares with us break my heart. I now view Tommy in the same way one would view a vampire puppy-- with an equal mixture of "aw" and "eek".I can be sure that the next midnight screening I attend, I'll be giggling to myself over how long it took to shoot the famous, "I did naaht heet her" line. Or over the real reason why Peter was blinking so much. Or whether the enigmatic Chloe knows what obscenities audiences yell when they see her name appear onscreen. Without this book I would never have known that I've memorized The Room better than Tommy Wiseau. It was a fantastic read and I'm so excited to see what Greg Sestero does next!

I am a little bit obsessed with The Room. It's not a constant thing--I can go for months without watching it or talking about it or probably even thinking about it--but sooner or later, I find myself talking to a friend or acquaintance about my love of entertainingly bad movies, and I mention the The Room as being (in my opinion) the best bad movie ever made. Usually the person I'm speaking to will not have heard of The Room, or will have heard of it but not seen it, which immediately necessitates bringing up internet video footage and inevitably rekindles the obsession. Who is this Tommy Wiseau? Where did he get that crazy accent, how old is he, and how in the heck did he make enough money to pour six million dollars of his personal fortune into this movie, and what on earth was he trying to accomplish by doing so?If you have seen The Room, you probably already realize that the man behind the movie is a person who doesn't see things the way the rest of us see them. We see poorly-built sets, ill-fitting and unflattering costumes, stilted dialogue riddled with non sequiturs, rampant continuity issues, bad green screen special effects, nonsensical plotlines, and most of all, Tommy himself, who is probably the worst actor you've ever seen unless you attend a lot of middle school theater productions...and maybe even then. But, as this book very eloquently explains, Tommy saw something else entirely. If you are looking for pee-your-pants funny anecdotes about what it was like for Greg Sestero to be first Tommy's friend and then, eventually, his employee on the set of The Room, they're here. (He had to write down the code to his apartment's gate because he could never remember it--it was 1234!!) If you want to understand the many issues that plagued the production of The Room and how the thing got finished against all odds, that's here too. (Short answer: he's loaded. Money can fix almost anything.) If you want to understand who Tommy Wiseau is, that is probably an exercise in futility, but Greg Sestero does an admirable job in showing us his own understanding of that question, as well as some of how Tommy understands himself. (He's a vampire, obviously.) This was a very satisfying read that I think came as close to answering my questions about Tommy Wiseau as anything possibly could.Obviously it's easy to make fun of The Room, as I have done myself in my Amazon review of it. And there is a side to Tommy Wiseau that is very hard to like--manipulative, vain, secretive, annoying, argumentative, cruel, misogynistic, and insecure, and I think you can see aspects of that in The Room. But there is also another side to him, a side that's playful, naive, fun, and really kind of delightful, and I think that's why I keep coming back to The Room, because that side of him comes out in the final cut too. No one else could have made this movie because if anyone else tried, they'd know just how bad it was, and they wouldn't be able to stop themselves from throwing a little irony in there, letting you know that they know. The Room doesn't do that--it is utterly sincere in its awfulness, and that makes it kind of charming and really special. It is very difficult to coordinate the million details that need to come together to make a movie, as I knew even before I read this book, but Tommy Wiseau did that against all the odds, and I give him credit for that. I think very few of us who have enjoyed The Room ever suspected that Tommy Wiseau was trying to make a movie about the worst experience of his life, that he is Johnny in a very literal sense, and that he fully expected the audience to react to his movie the same way he had reacted to his reality. Of course they didn't...but they watched it and loved it anyway, and that is an accomplishment, even if it's not quite the accomplishment he was hoping for.Thank you, Greg Sestero, for writing this truly entertaining and illuminating book. And also for being Tommy's friend all those years and not murdering him and depriving the world of the amazing and unbelievable disaster that is The Room.

While on the surface a filmmaking behind-the-scenes tell-all in the vein of The Devil’s Candy (Bonfire of the Vanities) or Losing the Light (The Adventures of Baron Munchausen) about the notoriously bad cult film The Room, The Disaster Artist is a personal memoir about the men behind the film, and an examination of co-author Greg Sestero’s complicated relationship with the even more complicated and mysterious Tommy Wiseau. This book has everything that The Room fans undoubtedly crave, with plenty of backstage shenanigans and revelations on the how and why of some of the more famous aspects of the film, such as what is up with the spoons? But it’s the human element of the book that most will find the most revealing, as Sestero shines a light on the tragically human figure behind Wiseau’s outwardly wacky and enigmatic presence. It’s a must read for film fans, but be prepared to do more than just laugh at bad filmmaking.SPECIAL NOTE: For those who have yet to read the book or see James Franco’s film adaptation, I highly recommend seeing the film first. Franco’s film is a faithful adaptation of the spirit of the book, but much was obviously excised and changed in order to adhere to feature film length, and I personally feel that the discoveries to be found by reading the true accounts after watching the abbreviated film translation will actually increase your appreciation of both.

Review

"...thoroughly absorbing...one of the strongest nonfiction books to appear yet in 2015...Carroll is a winningly immediate writer, with a deeply personal feel for the memorable, the authentic. His book is studded with great scenes and great moments....A great deal of Peaks on the Horizon reads like diving into a bonfire; this is travel-writing of the highest order, simultaneously ambassadorial and conspiratorial. All travelers – armchair or otherwise – are urged not to miss it."Open Letters Monthly"A pithily descriptive writer....Lobsang’s story and Carroll’s mixture of history and personal observation will strongly appeal to readers interested in Tibet."—Booklist"The narrative reads like fiction and Carroll builds a lot of suspense into it. VERDICT Recommended for all travel collections."—Library Journal Starred Review"He richly describes the landscape of the country and its people…suspenseful…A gripping, enlightening journey." —Kirkus"…passionate account…Carroll’s passion for the topic bleeds on to the pages, making this both a love letter to Tibet and a call to arms for Tibetan freedom. By adding Lobsang’s tale, Carroll further humanizes the effort.…In this engrossing and even enlightening book, Carroll meets that mandate." —Publishers Weekly, Starred

I have been to Tibet and run a charity for Tibetan refugees to which I devote a lot of my time and energy. I found this book to be a very interesting book and also match my experience of Tibet and Tibetans… It is also an important book for what it shows about life in Tibet today. I had borrowed this book from the local library and liked it so much I bought it after reading a good bit of it.

Charlie Carroll is a great storyteller who weaves together his own story of visiting Tibet with that of a native Tibetan who had to flee Tibet when the country was annexed by China. Thus we get to see the country's landscape and suborned politics from both inside and out. Tibet is a tragic case on the world stage, a fact Carroll brings home simply and without pedantry. It's a book that should be read by anyone interested in Tibet or Tibetan Buddhism, or by anyone interested in the doctrine that a lie repeated often enough becomes the truth.

An intense, beautifully written story (actually two stories, and the serendipitous crossing of two paths). It is much more than an interesting account of a recent visit to Tibet, which is what I was expecting. Read it!

A very detailed account of Tibet's struggle for freedom and China's control of a beautiful once independent country.

Really enjoyed the book. I like the way Charlie wove todays travel and Chinese history in Tibet together for an enlightening and educational read.

I have great respect for this author. His passionate yearning for an exotic faraway country has blossomed into an adventure he now shares with his readers, enlightening us about the sufferings and the nobility of Tibetans. The rest of the world needs to know about the struggles of Tibet. I am grateful to have received the message of this powerful, well-written book.

A great read. Two journeys to Tibet - one the author's who has dreamt of going to Tibet since childhood and the other Lobsang's, who had to leave as a child, but returns. The reader learns so much about Tibet, Buddhism, the Chinese occupation and ensuing genocide. Well written, engaging and informative, but never didactic. An important story.

This is an amazing book, full of heart, compassion and insight into life in Tibet since Mao and the “cultural revolution.” "Peaks" parallels the author’s experiences with those of a young Tibetan man’s journey from Tibet to Nepal to India and back to Tibet. It’s a heartfelt yet surprisingly dispassionate telling of their stories, and of the systematic genocide of the Tibetan people and culture by the Chinese. The true story is engaging, compelling and poetically told, an altogether gripping read.

I ordered a copy for my students and also bought it for my Kindle to check it out before it arrived. (That probably wasn't necessary, but at least now I have a children's book on my Kindle in case I ever need one!) The book was chosen for one of my first graders who always grumbles about how much he hates reading. He LOVES this book! I'm pretty sure it's the words 'butt on chair' that kept his attention. Do I love having books with "butt" in them for 1st graders? No. Am I willing to do what it takes to get kids interested in reading? Yes. Cute book, regardless!

My 1st grader is not in to reading AT ALL. She struggles with it. After hearing everyone in school and at home talk about how awesome reading is, how much "power" it gives you, how you can explore new worlds through books...I think she just felt discouraged and different because she truly does not like reading ANYTHING. Then I forced her to read this book...within 2 pages, she lit up. She found her tribe. Other kids feel the same as her!? What? They pick books with big pictures so there are less words? Like she does? This book touched her in a place that no other book has and honestly made her feel not so alone. She thought is was hilarious. It also sends a message that all parents, schools and teachers make kids read (not just struggling readers), and it is OK if you are one of the kids that secretly hates it. Exactly what she needed!

He loved it. My son hates reading. He is a head of his grade for reading. He isn't ready to give up picture books, but the books for his age are to simple. This was simple but a great introduction to why books without pictures can be fun. He loved it. Also check out the kindle book this book has no pictures. He loved that too.

I Hate Reading is an adorable little book that I would absolutely recommend for any child that hates reading.I Hate Reading is a very cleverly written book. It addresses a subject that plagues many children, a dislike of reading. Let's face it, some kids are readers and love to read books and other kids would rather do anything but read. This book appeals to the second group of kids, the ones who would rather do anything else but read. This book brings a dislike of reading into the foreground with humor and laughter. The child will turn page after page, and read for the humor and laughter effect, and of course the end result is that when they reach the end of the book they have actually read the book. The book does not have pictures like you would expect to find in most books. It has some simple graphics, and while they are simple like movie reels and arrows, they are also cleverly placed and fit the book beautifully. I listened to a 7 year old and her 9 year old brother read this book. They took turns page after page, and giggled through most of it. The highlight for the kids was the "butt on chair" page which has a very simple graphic that is brilliantly placed that resembles butt cheeks. Of course that page got the most laughter and giggles out of the kids.As someone who has worked extensively in classrooms with kids over the years, I have come to learn that some kids learn better through humor than through actually doing things the regular way. This book truly emphasizes that. As a former teacher, I would have loved to see this book touch upon why reading is so important, and not just be an anti-reader-that-makes-you-read, if that makes sense. Overall, a delightful and fun read that will have even anti-readers laughing from beginning to end, I highly recommend this book.

Not at all what I was expecting! I'm sure the book is to be taken as tongue in cheek but felt like instead of encouraging reading it just made fun of reading. They may read this book but it definitely doesn't help encourage them to read anything else (other than road signs) it only gives them more ideas how to fake reading and to get out of it.

I Hate Reading is a hilarious and clever book to get your kid engaged in reading. Starting out as a “cheat sheet” for getting out of reading, it actually draws you in and then you can’t stop till you’re done. Before your know it, you’re child while have done their 20 minutes of reading without even realizing it. My son thought it was cute, and suggested we buy another for his friend's birthday.

This was a great book. My son absolutely loved it. He read the book several times and told me all about it. I even laughed out loud several times. This was along the same lines as The Book With No Pictures. I love how the author takes something so mundane as reading and makes it come to life. I like how silly the book was because it makes kids want to read the story as well as listen to the story. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants their kids to love reading.

I purchased this for my granddaughter and she read it right away and she liked the book. She thought it was fun and got the message of the book so it did what it was supposed to and I only wish it was longer because there was not a lot of reading on each page but I guess that is how you get someone to read who does not like it. I think the humor in this book helped her to see reading is not so bad and she is reading a new book now.

The Rights of the Defenseless: Protecting Animals and Children in Gilded Age America, by Susan J. Pearson

Review

“Deftly weaving together analysis and example, The Rights of the Defenseless is an insightful study that will make a significant contribution to our understanding of nineteenth-century reform, the relationship between politics and literature, and the changing meaning of rights in American political discourse. This is a persuasive and compelling work of scholarship.” (Michael Grossberg, Indiana University)“Rights of the Defenseless is an original and insightful work that richly explores rights talk, sentimental culture, and law enforcement in postbellum America. Susan Pearson considers these crucial themes through a most novel topic: how humane societies linked the suffering of animals and children in order to claim the mantle of antislavery reform. Extensive research grounds the vivid elucidation of the relationship between public power and private reform. Rights of the Defenseless is a powerful intervention into scholarly analysis of rights beliefs.” (Amy Dru Stanley, University of Chicago)“The Rights of the Defenseless is much more than an examination of the development of specific policies by humane societies, more than a case study of the emergence of Progressive era reform as it applied to the protection of children and animals.  Rather, Susan Pearson uses the very specific concern with these two forms of dependency to explore the definition of rights in liberal discourse; the boundary between person and animal in modern thought and practice; the symbolic configuration of self and society in nineteenth-century political culture; the emergence of a modern mode of linking feeling to reason to action. I do not think it is too much to say that this book will redefine the understanding of the humanitarian sensibility and its place in modern American culture. This is history as an act of the moral imagination in the very best sense.” (Daniel Wickberg, University of Texas, Dallas)“This insightful examination of private charities being endowed with public power brings a new dimension to the relationship between agencies and governmental protections. . . . This work provides a unique perspective of animal rescue and child saving by linking them to the larger ideas of pet keeping, childhood sacredness, and domestic ideology.” (Choice)“Much more than a case study of humane reform, it should be required reading for anyone seeking to understand the humanitarian sensibility and the trajectory of reform responses in modern America.” (American Historical Review)"Surveying an impressive range of texts, from children's literature to political science, from philosphy to animal training and parenting manuals, Susan J. Pearson provides a dense history of the culture that allowed animals and children to be linked conceptually and politically in the public mind. . . . Pearson's well-supported argument demonstrates clear lines of connection between animal and child protection without reducing the complexity of either. . . ." (Monica Flegel Journal of American Studies) “Susan J. Pearson’s The Rights of the Defenseless provides an excellent look at the efforts to protect animals and children from cruelty in the United States between the antebellum and progressive eras. . . . An important contribution to the growing historiography of animals and society.”  (American Nineteenth Century History)“The Rights of the Defenseless is a beautifully crafted, intellectual-cultural history of law and society in the Gilded Age. It provides a novel and persuasive answer to a question that has puzzled scholars of American social welfare since the early twentieth century: why were societies for the prevention of cruelty to animals established before similar child protection associations were created?” (Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era)“In her elegant book, Susan Pearson examines the many contact points between campaigns to protect children and animals from harm in the nineteenth century. The result is a subtle, illuminating reconsideration of both humanitarianism and liberalism in which anticruelty advocates and organizations intercede between nineteenth- and twentieth-century conceptions of government and citizenship.” (Historian)“This book is an intellectual and cultural explanation of the forces and ideas propelling Americans toward that more activist and interventionist state. It is compelling and important.” (Journal of American History)
