It had been a while since I had read any ongoing series of comics and was looking for a jumping on point with one of the characters or teams that I liked. I just happened to stumble upon this on sale on amazon for $9 and decided to give it a try. I was really impressed by the artwork. I'm normally partial to certain artists. My favorites are Jim Lee and Michael turner and most other art pails in comparison in my opinion, but like I said before I liked the art even though it was by someone I'd never heard of. The only reason I mention the art first is because this is a comic and naturally the art is what catches your eye first. It doesn't matter how great the writing is, if the art is subpar it will take away from or your enjoyment of the work as a whole. If the art didn't matter I'd be reading something that didn't have pictures.Now to the writing. I've never read much by Gail Simone. I know who she is from Special Features on some of DC Comics DVDs that have come out in the past few years. I do know that she was a long time writer for Birds of Prey. Because of the her time on that series I believe there isn't a writer out there that knows Barbara Gordon the way she does. I don't mean Barbara as Batgirl either. I'm talking about who Barbara is deep down inside. The person she was in the wheelchair as Oracle. The person she was beforehand as well. Since she knows the character and all Barbara's been through, Gail is the perfect person to get her out of the chair and back into the Bat-suit where she belongs.I can't wait to get my hands on the second collected edition in the series. I highly recommend this to any fan of the Batman family series of books whether you are a long time reader or someone that only knows the characters from the movies. If you are someone that loves comic art and are looking for a good story, you must read this as well. This is a promising start to what looks to be one of the best series out right now.

Batman said it best in issue #6: "You were always meant to be Batgirl, Barbara." I like that Barbara Gordon is unsure of herself, suffering from insecurity after having recovered from her paralysis at a South African clinic where she underwent a radical new treatment that restored her legs and got her out of a wheelchair (which Joker put her in by shooting her and damaging her spinal cord) (see "The Killing Joke" GN). I LIKE that she's not sure of herself, not a heavyweight brawler like Batman. She has to pick her fights carefully. She is fragile, and that is dealt with in these opening issues, where she's exploring her physical limits, trying not to re-injure herself, but driven by compulsion to fight crime.There are two villains in this collection. First, a new character named Mirror, and another by the name of Gretl--both "damaged" by incidents beyond their control, which causes Barbara to deal with them out of compassion rather than anger or just the raw power of Batman. She "cares", but not to the point of allowing them to continue their murder sprees. First, Mirror lost his family in a car accident, his wife and two girls burned while he was forced to watch, as someone pulled him from the car and he alone survived. This damaged him, caused him to begin killing people who were saved by miraculous means, which he feels goes against the natural way of things--no one should survive when they were meant to die. Obviously a self reflection--hence, the name Mirror.The second villain, Gretl, was similarly victimized, but not by an accident but rather by mobsters. She was an aspiring reporter who infiltrated a gang lord's inner circle but was caught, and then murdered. Only, she didn't quite die, and the bullet to her head gave her the power to hypnotize/mesmerize men to do her bidding.In both of these cases, writer Gail Simone takes the reader on a journey through Barbara's mind, exploring her misgivings and doubts about herself as someone who overcame her disability and was able to walk again. There is a moment when she is uncertain, and even one incident where she freezes and allows someone to die--very human frailties and weaknesses that are often lost on the reader of Batman, who seems all-powerful at times, and only taken down by the most powerful of foes.Among all of the Bat-series, (and I read them all), I put them in this order by preference:BatmanDetectiveDark KnightBatman and RobinBatgirlCatwomanNightwingTeen TitansRed Hood and the OutlawsBirds of PreySuicide Squad

I must confess something, When the new 52 re-launched, I had no intention of trying to read Batgirl. I was coming in for Batman and Catwoman only. But let me tell you that would've been a grave mistake, because Batgirl is one of the best comics rewritten in the new 52. She is a lot like her counter-part from the 1990's animated series, even going so far as to use words like "doofus" and it is really cute. If you liked the show from the 90's, you need to buy Batgirl's comic because it will be a refreshing taste of nostalgia and it might even get you into reading more comics. Batman is the Dark and Nightwing is the light and Batgirl fits neatly in between those two extremes making it appealing to just about everybody. The story is rich and real, and I actually liked both of her villains a lot. They aren't Batman's villains, but they could be. No other Bat Comic has bad guys anywhere near as interesting as Batman's so this is a huge plus for Batgirl and her Author. For the fans who got upset by Barbara being able to walk again, don't be. As soon as you read it you will see that Barbara "Was always meant to be Batgirl." One of my favorite moments of the book was the interaction she had with Nightwing for one issue. This story was definitely written for us girls and when Nightwing and Batgirl part ways so she can find her confidence on her own again you will be so heartbroken. Just as I Believe Batman and Catwoman were Made for each other, I Believe Barbara and Dick are practically soul mates and I Love Barbara's inner monologues. They are very sophisticated but still filled with emotion. The Story on it's own is already good, but Batgirl is definitely first and foremost about the character. What she does is only one part of it and that is how you keep readers engaged.

Starting this book I was at a strong 3.5 stars, then it bumped up to 4, and then the end had me in such a mess that it suddenly became 5. A miracle this is.The story and plot revolves around the Trojan war and the moments before and after where Patroclus meets Achilles and laters waits for him. The flow is actually quite gentle, even during the war fighting. I had expected more action and heart racing moments, and that is maybe why I did not rush into a higher rating.However, even though I had a feeling of who and the knowledge of death, I was still struck hard. It did not come on suddenly, no. It crept slowly, clung to my heart and then watered in my eyes. It was the reaction to death that got me.The end is beautiful and sweet. It brings together the readers and the characters who are in pain and comforts us and makes us allies.The writing is also wonderful. It's poetic and lovely at times. Of course if you do not like things being compared to unrelated things, such as the plumpness of lips to that of a bee, then you will disagree with me here. Regardless, this is the writing style I most adore in moderation and thus have loved this book.

I have never read the Iliad, and I thought it might be fun to delve into a modern treatment of the story. This book had so many great reviews that it seemed worth buying. However, I stopped reading the novel when I was about 30% of the way through. By this time it became clear that the author was going to make the romance between Patroclus and Achilles the centerpiece of the book. For instance as teens, Achilles and Patroclus spend two or three years in the wilderness with a centaur who is supposed to be instructing Achilles in the art of war... except he doesn't. Patroclus is not supposed to be in the wilderness with them, but he tags along anyway. This means that Patroclus himself has the opportunity to learn the art of war from this great centaur who taught Heracles how to fight, but Patroclus doesn't either. It appears that the only reason these two were with centaur in the wilderness for a couple years was to allow the author to crate a bucolic love nest for the boys. And for unexplained reasons, Achilles' mother, Thetis, seems to have always hated Patroclus. Again from a Romance-novel point-of-view, her intense animosity seems to exist only to create a "forbidden love" situation between Patroclus and Achilles. It all seemed so contrived.

For better or for worse, the Homeric epics are a bedrock part of the Western literary canon. Madeline Miller's The Song of Achilles looks at The Iliad from a fresh perspective: that of Patroclus, Achilles' closest companion. Since this is a retelling of a classic story (a genre to which I am predisposed), we already know how it's going to play out: Agamemnon will steal a slave girl claimed by Achilles, leading to the hero refusing to fight for the Greeks, leading to Patroclus donning his armor and being slain by Hector of Troy, leading to Achilles killing Hector and dragging him around the walls of his city, only to be killed himself by an arrow from Hector's brother Paris. What's different is what comes before and between.As most of us know, it was not uncommon in Ancient Greek life for older men to have sexual relationships with younger men. Homosexual relationships between men of the same age, however, were rarer. When I was taught The Iliad, even in college, the bond between Patroclus and Achilles was usually described as just a deep friendship (lip service was paid to the idea they could have been lovers but it was never taught as being the more persuasive interpretation). Miller's novel, however, roots itself in the alternate interpretation: she presents us with Achilles, the most gifted warrior in Greece, as a man in a loving and stable lifelong relationship with Patroclus.It would actually be more accurate to say she presents us with Patroclus as the romantic partner of Achilles: the story belongs to Patroclus, it is told through his eyes. Patroclus as created by Miller is a gentle soul, a disappointment to his aggressive father, who is banished when he kills another child purely by accident. He is sent to Peleus, father of Achilles, to be fostered, and is chosen by Achilles of all the young men at court to be his companion. Their relationship only gradually becomes romantic, much to the disgust of Achilles' river goddess mother, Thetis. She conspires more than once to break the couple apart, but their love is too strong and they remain together until the end. Miller explains Achilles' rage over the theft of his slave girl as being not about being deprived of a lover, but as being disrespected as the greatest soldier in the army by having his rightfully-claimed prize taken away.I found it a much more enjoyable take on the story than the original. Miller really gets the time to develop Patroclus and Achilles as characters in depicting them from boyhood all the way through adulthood. She paints a very devoted relationship between them: though both briefly experiment with sex with women, they never stray from each other and Achilles refuses to leave Patroclus despite strong maternal pressure to do so. Since Miller's Patroclus isn't a skilled or enthusiastic warrior and instead serves the Greek contingent at Troy as a healer, most of the battlefield scenes that I find so boring to read are left out entirely. This is a solid read for fans of historical fiction and/or classical retellings.

After sitting through meeting after meeting this year as a local director and bumbling along, I felt it was time that I learned consistant and correct meeting protocal. I have finished half of the book (as it is a very quick read) and already found that many of my meeting questions have been answers. Very impressed.

It was an excellent book for those looking to start an organization from the ground up. For those who have a smattering of familiarity of Robert's Rules much of the book will go over processes that one may know. However, don't skip through the book, as there are a number of details that will add so much to your deeper understanding.

Not very-well written and I thought it was missing important information. Also, the book mocked the Fraternal Order of the Elks, which was not necessary to make their point and it was tacky. No listed author either.

Bought this as gift for our Associations newly elected President. MUCH easier to understand than original Roberts Rules of Order

Overall meeting format very much appreciated. Negative..not enough detail.

The chapter on charters, bylaws, and policies encouraged me to reorganize the document of the organization I chair to make the document more sensible and useable.

I've been to several of Jose Andres' restaurants and i loved them, and i love spanish food, so was looking forward to trying these recipes. The recipes themselves look delicious in the book - but I've found them hard to replicate (myself, without any special cooking training). Some of the recipes had ingredients that I had trouble finding so I had to substitute. I wish that it was a little more accessible, or perhaps made suggestions on substitutes for the more exotic ingredients

This is a wonderful book! I noticed a couple reviews were very negative but just because you haven't experienced it yourself doesn't make it any less real. I was very surprised by this book. I have been pretty skeptical of a lot of the energetic healing disciplines out there, and I was not really expecting much. However, this book and the presentation does provide techniques that do work. I am still working my way through the book, but the method working for me is to read a chapter, practice the techniques for a few days until I have them down in order to continue. I really like the examples and stories presented by both Stephen and Eric, as it helps to give a foundation of this really happening to people. The book is a great beginner tool, and once you start to practice the exercises you start to want more. I am now going to purchase the entire book set of Pranic Healing! Give this book a shot, keep an open mind, and just honestly follow the techniques. If you do, you will notice something happening.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I wanted to love it; I read it straight through. However, I didn't like the main character, who was basically a former mob enforcer. She's driven by rage with two magical guns who (yes, "who" is correct here) egg her on. I really liked the dog, though and there was a hook at the end that got me to pre-order the next book in the series.I think part of my problem is that I got dropped into an urban fantasy world that didn't get much explaining. Are "abnormals" good/bad/just normal folks with magic/something else? What is their status in the world?I did like some of the twists and turns, but the problem with first-person narrative is that the reader is as surprised as the character at those twists. I prefer to have some foreshadowing, though.If you are a fan of the author, you will probably like the book. If you are a fan of urban fantasy, you might try it out. I suspect the next book will be better.This book really deserves 3.5 stars; I gave it 4 because I liked it enough to get the sequel.

Nix is the female version of John Wick with a touch of the supernatural and a deal with the devil. She is a total bad a**. This is a bit outside the normal for Shannon Mayer and I am so glad she decided to take the risk with this book. It was certainly worth it. I loved it. Nix was an assassin, the person her father sent in when things didn't go the way he wanted them to. She left that life to live in rural America with her husband and son. One fateful night and all that's taken from her. Hell hath no fury than a woman whose lost her child. Retribution shall be hers. In her search for the one's responsible for her family's deaths, she discovers her quiet life was built on lies, not just her own. This book kept me on the edge of my seat. There were several times my heart started pounding. I am looking forward to the rest of the books in this series. This just might be Shannon Mayer's best series so far … and that's saying something.

If you Love Fantasy / Urban Fantasy literture and haven't read Shannon Mayer, Where have you been ? Mayer is one of the most prolific novelists I know and unlike James Patterson, she actually writes her own books. In this fantastic trilogy opener a human woman living a quiet peaceful country life with her husband and young son is thrust back into the magical and deadly world she took so long to escape when her family is murdered before her eyes. Raised and trained to be a deadly weapon against the magical beings, Nix brings those skills back for revenge against those responsible. It starts fast, gets faster, you will read it sitting on the edge of your seat and scream when it ends because of the teaser / twist at the end. Shannon Mayer, the celebrated Author of the Rylee Adamson and Elemental series has hit another one out of the park. Nix may be my favorite heroine yet.

Shannon has done it again! I am a pretty die-hard fan of Shannon's and collect much of her work. This book was reminiscent of another favorite series of mine, the Elemental Assassin series by Jeniffer Estep. However, this book had Mayer's distinct mark left throughout it and I devoured it! It was interesting having inanimate objects talk,but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters were well thought out and I have a feeling the continuation of the living ones will prove entertaining. 😊I also enjoyed her dog Abe being along for the ride. I can only imagine how difficult writing a pet such as a dog into a story can be and Mayer made it completely believable.The only wish of difference I had is wanting to know the age of Phoenix's son earlier on in the book. Because the reader isn't told until almost 1/4 of the way through the book, it made visualization of his character up until then difficult. The story is so damn good though that I didn't let it bug me too much. Lol.Bravo Shannon, you did it again, another amazing novel!~The Other Shannon

Fury of a Phoenix, The Nix Series Book 1 by Shannon Mayers.I have read everything that Shannon Mayer has written and love it all. The newest series and novel by Shannon Mayer will keep you guessing and cheering for the good guy, well the grey guys. This is a great novel and it keeps surprising me on every turn.I definetly recommend this and all novels by Shannon Mayers

I'm a big fan of Shannon Mayer and this time around, she doesn't disappoint. Our very bad@$$ protagonist lets you know it's no secret what she used to do for a living and is trying to lay low and live a nice relaxing life; sadly, that life comes backs and bites and boy, does she bite back with a vengeance.I can't wait to read more!!!You are always learning new things about all the characters; they are definitely well done and becoming more complex as time passes.

Phoenix is trained by her father to be a hit"woman" for her father who has made a deal with the devil and acquired 3 abnormals to help in his shady business. After her sister kills herself, Phoenix has had enough. She buries her sisters body where no one can find her and she inherits the Guns her sister owned. No ordinary guns they are magical. Phonenix takes on her sisters identity and runs to Wyoming to start a new life. She finds that with Justin whom she marries and they have a Boy named Bear. Justin and Bear are her life. Raising and selling horses on their ranch fills their days. Things go suddenly bad and while heading home they are in an awful accident and the truck goes in the water. As Phoenix tries to save Justin and bear someone walks up and shoots Justin in the head. Bear is drowning and she tries to save him but someone knocks her In the head. She thinks this is all because she has been found but as she digs she realizes Justin was not who he claimed to be. So starts her investigation to see who killed her family and why. I read this book in 10 hours I could not close it! Cannot wait till book 2 which will be out September!!!
